The people that say that SEED is only retroactively bad because of Destiny, have exceedingly low standards for what qualifies as "decent." The only good things that SEED brought to the table were that it looked brand-new and shiny due to using digital animation instead of the cels of the previous era (meaning that it's even less redeemable now that it doesn't have that advantage anymore), the MS designs (sole credit for which really should go to Okawara), the music (which was really a symptom of how poorly mismanaged its budget was), and the porn (partly due to Hiraiface, though IMO he's redeemed himself since with MJP).

And don't forget about the HD "remaster" where everything actually looks worse and they retconned Nicol into committing suicide.

It didn't randomly veer. It took it's genetic modification thing and went "Gee, Metal Gear Solid is pretty popular and it talks about genes. Let's copy that for the people too young to play it!" Thus they turned it's Char-clone into Liquid Snake.

It's widely accepted here that Gundam SEED episode 1-30 are a good show; maybe a little too derivative but with solid mecha designs and interesting politics. The second half is less good, with the writers losing track of any narrative goals and simply using the protagonist as a fix-all.

Gundam SEED Destiny is the infamously ridiculous Gundam show, with copy-pasted plots from SEED itself, bastardized characters, bizarre politics, plot twists and ending. Still fairly good mecha design but overall a confusing and enraging watch.

I watched SEED when it premiered in 2002 back when I was in high school. Even then, I knew it was shit. You can bash on Wing, but it had nowhere near the clusterfuck retardation that SEED had.

The Astray sidestories, however, are pretty good. In fact, I really liked Canard Pars. His story was way more compelling than Kira's by a mile.

Most of the hate came from Destiny and the Remaster.
People who didn't like Kira got hyped about the way that advertising and promo articles made it look like Shinn would replace Kira and Kira would get called out for his behavior. But what actually happened was "Kira Is Always Right: The Animated Series" and the butthurt was so severe that it still throbs in their asses to this very day. Then the Remaster of SEED removed responsibility for Nicol's death from Kira making him even more perfect and /m/ turned on all of CE (but still secretly likes Stargazer).

And speak for yourself, way back in 2002 and 2003, fans of mecha and Gundam were quite vocal about what was wrong with SEED. I gave it a chance to prove itself and it utterly failed after the infamous Kira/Athrun deathmatch.

SEED was a weak as hell series, but it did have its moments, and it did have a few interesting characters. I like how they resolved Rau and his need for a mask, for example. However, it's still probably the worst Gundam series I ever saw.
