I've watched bits and pieces of Godzilla stuff over the years, but now I want to properly get into the franchise and kaiju in general.
Where do I start at? Which ones are the good ones? Anything I shouldn't bother with?
Watch the original first.
The original 1954 Gojira is the only good one. The rest are dumb Toho movies.

Thanks
>>15043390
>i want better special effects
>it leads to the spark filled and stiff prop filled heisei series
lmao
Any of the 60s Godzilla movies are a good time. Most of them are actually well made.
>>15043371
Godzilla 1954
Mothra vs godzilla (1964)
Monster Zero
Destroy all monsters
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974)
Terror of Mechagodzilla
Godzilla 1984
GMK
Godzilla x Mechagodzilla (2002)
Shin godzilla
Tht should more or less give you a taste of everything, serious, more fun, a little of both. Those aren't the only ones worth watching but for beginnings sake that gives you a lot to work with
Also Gamera's 90s trilogy of you want more monsters even if it isn't godziller
>>15045040
Destroy all Monsters is such a fucking boring movie.
Stop recommending it.
>>15045276
Id like to see you try and stop me
pretty new to this myself, (only seen some showa and the new one) but of what I've seen,
original>rodan>mothra vs. godzilla>the rest>>>>>>>>>>>shit>>>>>>>>>>all monsters attack
>Which ones are the good ones?
Original, GMK and Shin.
Original
1984
vs Biollante
2000
>>15043371
Just watch everything in release order. Also this is true of almost every franchise so you won't ever need to make a thread asking a similar question again.
>>15043390
I know these charts are always just some guys opinion but seriously fuck this one so much.
>2014 is a faithful re-imagining.
Yeah, you know except Godzilla isn't even created by nuclear energy or even by man at all. Not like him being an analogy for the lasting impact of man's actions was ever been important in the original I guess. Even 1998 almost got that right.
>King Kong in the goofy category
Why exactly? Because the King Kong suit isn't very good? Its pretty tame on the goofy scale by Showa standards.
>Mechagodzilla and Terror of Mechagozilla in their own category because...?
I accept this one is just my autism going off but why the fuck are they in their own box for no reason?
>>15045683
This is a good list
>>15046146
>Why exactly?
Well it is basically part-comedy, with several comedic actors and a lotta camp. Maybe not as zany as some late-Showa stuff, but at the time of its release it was a pretty big shift in tone compared to the previous installments and the following one.
Is there a non-dubbed version of Godzilla 2000?
>>15046146
>Why exactly?
Well the fact that it was directed as a comedy. The fact that the movie is a comedy. It's honestly the worst in that regard compared to the other Showa films, even megalon is less comedic than that
>>15046305
Kiss asian doesn't have it? I thought they did
>>15046305
Yes, but 2000 is the only one where you should watch the dub. The dubbing is cheesy on purpose as a sort-of homage to the old dubs. It's more entertaining than the kinda bland Jap script. Some scenes are removed to make for a better cut of the film too.
>>15046305
Kiss asian and the new blu ray.
I honestly don't see what the love is for the dub. Granted I don't think either version of the film is special, but the us cut ruins some scenes like by cutting the millennium computer hacking and kinda ruining the tokai landing scene. Also people seem to like that they made it more comedic, but I don't see the big deal. Also pointlessly makes Katagiri an asshole when he really was in the right
>recommending the original
Do people actually like this flick unironically or do they just list it in fear not to sound like a pleb?
>>15047244
Was 2000 the movie with that one guy shoutingGOD--ZILLAAAAAAAAAAA
>>15047601
Yes
Out of curiosity, are there any decent rips of the Goji blu-rays out there?
All I've ever found are 54, 84, Biollante and the American stuff. There's a barely seeded torrent with all the movies in HD, but they appear to be some kind of TV rip, and they don't look very good.
>>15047274
>does anyone like the enormously popular, critically acclaimed, now over 50 years old first film in a long running, successful franchise?
Nope, you've figured it out, they're all beta pleb cuck numales with meme opinions.
Godzilla Final Wars was FUCKING RAD
So I watched the original a couple days ago, and today I started watching the others (by release, but not all since I can't find all of them).
All I can say is WHAT THE FUCK happened after the original movie? It suddenly got goofy as fuck and all the kaiju moves around like they're high on drugs. Godzilla's model looks horrible too until around 90-00s where it started to improve a bit.
The original godzilla from the 50s is actually quite terrifying compared to anything that came shortly after it.
>>15048088
Sequelitis hit the franchise hard
It took another dip when old man Tsuburaya left to make Ultraman
And the magic was lost ever since
>>15047688
There aren't. Those TV rips are the best you can do if you don't want to be a buyfag.
Honestly the Blu-rays aren't much better. Better sound but not a huge leap in video quality.
>going over videos for the xmas stream
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMW9nus-r2w
didn't expect either of those songs at the start in a local hero show
>>15047711
Well, the franchise became popular the more it removed itself from the original.
1954 and GMK are the LEAST Godzilla-like movies if you look at the franchise as a whole.
>>15043371
>Godzilla vs Biollante
>Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla
>Godzilla vs Destoroyah
>Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla
These are all really good.
>>15048773
For a sec I thought that was the metal gear godzilla art
>>15048088
Honestly, it was almost happenstance that the original became as poignant as it did. The studio needed to quickly make a movie, they decided to go with a monster film, and the creators each added their own personal contributions to it that allowed it to become such a classic. But the original plans didn't necessarily call for the somber tone and allegory and all that.
After it proved successful, they squeezed out a quickie sequel with a no-ambition director, so the ball started rolling downhill almost immediately. When Godzilla was brought back for the 60s, it was a totally different cultural atmosphere. Kaiju films in the meantime became fun, colorful crowd pleasers, so Godzilla and his creators were forced to adapt to the changing climate of the Japanese entertainment industry.
Also, they brought in scriptwriter Shinichi Sekizawa, a guy famous for his comedic, satirical screenplays that put a large emphasis on fun. The director of special effects, Eiji Tsuburaya himself also embraced the lighter tone.
If you have the El Rey Network, they're doing a marathon of Godzilla movies until the 27th.

>>15049344
watch the original
then watch rodan
then watch everything from the 80s and 90s in order
then watch final wars
then watch godzilla 2014 and shin godzilla
Anyone ever watch these movies and wonder what the hell happens to the humans after all this shit goes down? I mean with the exception of few, we don't see these characters ever again.
What happens to Yuri after the godzilla story goes up in GMK? What happens to Maki and Naoko in 1984 since they're never referenced again in that series? What the fuck Happens to Akane after they just send the one Mecha pilot away in tokyo sos(which was so fucking stupid, she goes to the us for "training" but the kiryu is in japan? How the fuck is sending away your pilot a good idea? Did Akiba's government dad pull strings to let his asshole of a son be a pilot?)
