There's a handful of gems that prove they can like Megas, The Iron Giant, Symbionic Titan, or your pic related. While not as plentiful as eastern examples, the niche exists here too and when the people on charge love mecha it's usually well-done.

Shitting on a series because of its fanbase is ass backwards logic. It's a great revival to a cool mecha franchise. Also Voltron/Golion >>> Exo Squad.

Legendary Defender actually focuses very little on Voltron itself. It's only formed a handful of times over the course of the series and most mecha action is from the individual lions, which are also used fairly sparingly.

More emphasis on character interaction and creative problem solving.

It's not a bad thing. Makes it feel special when they do call on Voltron. Plus the fights are generally pretty good.

Someone mentioned when it just came out that they felt like the relatively little Voltron was kind of a reflection on the characters-- once they start getting real close as a team we'll start seeing more Voltron -- and I kinda think they were on the right track. However all of them are split up at the start of next season so we'll have to see how that goes. We're probably gonna see a lot more lion action though.

I think the fact they don't really resemble lions is more of an issue personally. That, and the lion mouth hands. Yea, I know, only the males have manes, so it could be female representations and even then not all male lions have manes - but putting aside that most do, the common artistic distinction between lions and tigers is the mane. As is, Voltron looks like a tiger mech, not a lion one.

Voltron reboot is better mecha than just about everything coming out of Japan right now, though it's sort of cheating because it's based on a Japanese property. Hopefully season 2 gets a bit more serious, there's good potential for Shiro's character to go places, and maybe Keith if his backstory is interesting.
