Kinda wish they'd bring Votoms back.

Or just make a Heavy Gear anime that wasn't shite.

That would be cool, but no one has the cash to shill for heavy gear.
Heck, not an anime but mechwarriors mercenaries with heavy gear/votoms kind of mechs would be so cool.

Think of it like a grandfather to Code Geass' KMFs. With Gasaraki's TA's as the missing link.

Taniguchi (CG's director) worked with Takahashi on Gasaraki, which had some overlapping themes with VOTOMS. Some of those overlapping themes carried over when Taniguchi made Geass.

The whole conspiracy theme mostly, and parallels between Yushiro/Miharu and Chirico/Fyana. Gasaraki is much more political though.

I'm of the opinion that Battletech would have been much better with Gears instead of Battlemechs. Really, the mechs are the weakest part of Battletech lore. Why build a 100 ton walker when you could build a 100 ton tank for maybe half the price.

>>
>>15039330
I feel the same fucking way. I prefer how mechs work in Heavy Gear, were a tank will wreck your squad if you aren't prepared and mechs aren't overpowered machines like in other series. The front mission combat manga were pretty rad too, shame I only played evolved and not any other FM game, the mechs are cool.
>>
>>15039342
No.
>>
>>15039330
>Why build a 100 ton walker when you could build a 100 ton tank for maybe half the price.
They literally answer this in every Battletech edition. A 100-ton tank can't carry the same sort of powerplant that a 100-ton mech does, so it's always a glass cannon because no amount of armor will make the tank capable of fighting a mech one-on-one.

Elementals, which are just powered-armor, really break the Battletech lore but because the technology is so advanced there are very few places that can build them 'mechs dominate.
>>
>>15039359
>A 100-ton tank can't carry the same sort of powerplant that a 100-ton mech does
This never makes any sense. Treads are more compact than legs and thus should be lighter. The weight is also closer to the ground and there's less surface area on a tank so the requirements for armor should be less.

You can argue that mechs have more surface area and thus can cool themselves better but this isn't represented in the rules. In fact, vehicles never have to deal with heat issues while mechs always do.

More than that, energy requirements are a minor issue when it comes to mech design as long as you don't use lasers or PPCs.
>>
>>15039381
Size.
>>
>>15039394
Size actually works against you in combat. Being 50 feet taller just means you're a bigger target and unless you've got some advantage to being big like heavier armor, more stability, or more redundancy being bigger just isn't worth it.
>>
>>15039404
The entire problem is that a 100-ton tank could not be competitive against 50-ton tanks that don't use Battlemech powerplants. You'd have something the size of a Maus carrying 2 PPCs or 2 ER-XL Lasers which, in the context of Battlemech, means it's probably as effective as an 80-ton Heavy while being far less effectively armored. And what it would be going up against is other tanks, typically 40-50-ton tanks that are faster, more maneuverable, and cheaper to build.

For the resources you put into a 100-ton superheavy tank, you can get a much more effective Battlemech.

But it is? Vees can't get DHS, and have to have enough HS to sink an alpha, while you can do laser bracket-fire with mechs (see Penetrator)
>>
>>15039417
>The entire problem is that a 100-ton tank could not be competitive against 50-ton tanks that don't use Battlemech powerplants

You're ducking the question of why. If a battlemech and a tank use the same tech then the tank would be the more effective design because it A. needs a far less bulky propulsion system B. has less surface area to armor and C.has an EXPOSED COCKPIT
>>
>>15039609
No, you're asking a stupid question that doesn't fucking apply. It's like asking why don't F-22 Raptors use the same powerplant as M1 Abrams? Because they're fighting in two completely different segments of the battlespace, completely different enemies, and have completely different strategic and tactical purposes.
>>
>>15039636
If we're comparing light and medium mechs like the Locust and the Griffon against MBTs I wouldn't bat an eye. Many light and medium mechs have jump jets that can take advantage of the legs as shock absorbers and are pretty fast even when dealing with rough terrain. They make excellent scouts and flankers and can even partially replace troop transports when carrying Battle Armor (because it's not just Elementals anymore).

The problem is when you get to the Heavy and Assault mechs which occupy the same tactical niche as medium and heavy tanks. At this point you really have to ask yourself what you're gaining by using legs instead of treads.

>The problem is when you get to the Heavy and Assault mechs which occupy the same tactical niche as medium and heavy tanks.
They do not. Heavy and Assault mechs are the equivalent of entire companies of tanks.

You're avoiding the question.

Why make a heavy or assault mech with legs? Why not replace them with treads? They'd be harder to shoot out and could support more weight. Why put hands on a mech when you can add more guns?

Why have an exposed cockpit?

The answer is that Assault and Heavy mechs don't even make sense in universe and are only justified by inexplicable nerfs to tanks. It's a failing in the setting and you'd be better off without it.
>>
>>15040387
And you're avoiding the answer.

>Why not replace them with treads? They'd be harder to shoot out and could support more weight.
Objectively wrong.

>Why put hands on a mech when you can add more guns?
Because mechs do not all fulfill the same purpose.

>Why have an exposed cockpit?
Can you point to one example of an exposed cockpit in Battletech? No, you can't.

Treads have more surface area than a foot while being proportionally smaller than a leg.

>Because mechs do not all fulfill the same purpose.
I could buy that for a light or medium mech but for an assault mech? Really, it's too heavy to do anything but head on assault and too clumsy to be subtle about it.

Also, many battlemechs don't have hands to begin with. so that argument falls apart.

>Can you point to one example of an exposed cockpit in Battletech? No, you can't.
I can see the pilot seat of a Madcat from the front.

And do you even play battletech? Mechs getting their cockpits shot out has been a thing since the succession wars.

They were a big hit; and particularly the Rick became a new standard suit for space combat in parallel with the already mass-produced Zaku, and was produced in very high numbers towards the end of the war.

The dom is like what the Focke Wulf 190 was to the Messerschmitt Bf 109 (Zaku), if you are familiar with those aircrafts.

My issue with the Timber Wolf is its more of something I could see for command or even a second tier character.

If we're gonna have a grunt from BattleTech, I'd choose one of the light mechs, like a Jenner or a Kit Fox.

Since the Leo and The Flag already got chosen I think the argument is over anyway.

A GM III for me one that's been in service ever since it was originally a plain old GM.
>>
>>15043005
That's not even a remotely accurate comparison. The Dom was just better than the Zaku. Every Luftwaffe ace preferred the 109.
>>
>>15051070
I guess I was just thinking about their overall characteristics, with the Dom and 190 being produced at a later time by a different company; relieving producton load, them being more heavily armoured and being able to carry more heavy armaments than the old workhorse.
And the fact that despite this both pairs of machines were operated at the same time by different squadrons and were all updated and operated to the end of the war.

But you are right. Where the luftwaffe fighters had similar performance with varying strengths and weaknesses; the Dom is just a straight upgrade, while the 190 was only advertised as one.

Gundam Wing had some of the most fantastic mecha designs, the first Tallgeese is still one of my favorite mechs in fiction. I wish I could enjoy Wing again, because it was what got me into MS:G in the first-place, but I just can't get into the melodramatic tone. Ironically the titular Gundams are the least-interesting mobile suits, for me, probably because they clashed against the more-grounded, realistic mechs they were pitted against.
