People think TTGL is the best mecha thing ever because their base of comparison is shit like Avatar and Bayformers. Even if they have watched a "classic" that somehow made its way over here (Gundam Wing, Macross Plus), those shows tend to be a lot more dour and boring than your typical hot-blooded manly robot show. I know I'd take Shin Mazinger over Dougram any day of the week.

and then be delusioned for the rest of your life since no other mecha anime has ever attained the emotional heights of Gunbuster. have some fun and watch Mazinger Z Impact. That's a good intro to Mazinger and overall hot blooded insanity. Either that or Gaogaigar. Next take a step further and watch Gunbuster to take things a bit more mature and character driven. I recommend Macross 1983 as well. Then take out the big guns and smack em with 00 and Layzner. And to top it all off break out Evangelion just to fuck with him. Then Gundam. All of it. Even the bad stuff

TTGL Is my all time favorite anime but its far from the flagship of the mecha genre. The reasons its one of the best anime of all time have nothing to do with the fact that it has super robots.
