SRW kind of stop evolving aesthetically and gameplay-wise a while ago. It's not surprising the fanbase mostly comes from older games rather than getting into it recently.

The lack of any big mecha hits recently hurts too, but even the games with debuts of series like Code Geass and Macross Frontier didn't get much of a boost out of it, so I don't think a big success would change things for SRW if it continues like this.

Newer games keep getting more beginner friendly though. Partially because you can overpower your favorite unit much faster and easier, and partially because well, they use more contemporary shows in newer games. Getting into Classic era as a newfag sounds impossible, and even Alpha series has lots of "obscure" franchises at this point. Z2 and Z3 on the other hand are perfect entry points for newfags because they have Code Geass, Macross Frontier, Evangelion, Gurren Lagann and Full Metal Panic, though I'm not sure if FMP is watched as much nowadays.

Maybe SRWV will bring a lot of newfags both to the general fanbase and /srwg/, though I'm sure we'll chase them away with SRWV's version of "animus of our comrades"

99% of Westerners probably suck at tactical games too, but I think there's a "spillover newcomer" effect in play - most tactical games don't look very good so it tends to be that only those that are competent will play those games anyway...

Despite what many people think RPGs do require a particular mindset to be played right, some people do not have that, hence why most RPGs allow grinding, especially with no repercussion.
Imagine if SRW was like Front Mission 2 on average, where you have to plan your character kills, behaviour and upgrades in every stage instead of just waiting for the infinite respawn stages or exploiting MAPs+Repair/Resupply.

The problem with YGO is that every show tries to be Duel Monsters, but with different flavours.

What they do not understand is that Duel Monsters, and the original manga, worked that well because of the characters themselves, not their roles, what every other show does is recycling those roles on different characters, but Kaiba works because he's Seto Kaiba, not the perfect ikemen rival, same with Jonouchi, even Jack who was the best Kaiba clone so far can't hold a candle to the original, same with all those Yugi clones, there's no sidekick as good at that role like Jonouchi was because they're all trying to ape one single aspect of Jonouchi's role without understanding that the whole deal of being a loveable hot headed PONKOTSU with a bit of an assholish side is what makes him great, that's why Sawatari sucks so much ass in Arc V, he only has the assholish side without being bro.
Same with villains, Vector tried its hardest to be as entertaining as Yami Marik but it simply doesn't work because he's not as batshit and doesn't have Marik's record.

Every new YGO series fails because they try and fail to recapture the magic of Duel Monsters instead of doing their own thing and being memorable in their own right.
Shit, even the cheating isn't as good as DM.

Arc-V and 5Ds both have strong starts and then devolve into mediocrity and/or total shit. The difference is that the best part of 5Ds is basically a complete story in and of itself while Arc-V is just 60 episodes of set up followed by constant filler, disappointment, and failure to develop any member of the cast properly. They both still kind of have their moments afterward, but yeah.

GX and Zexal are the opposite where they start out with a lot of dumb filler and get better. There's still stupid shit in the later parts no doubt (just as an example off the top of my had because someone mentioned it in the Yugioh thread over at /a/ recently, DUEL ZOMBIES in GX) but overall they still improve as they go on.

They're all pretty deeply flawed series but I still think they all (other than Arc-V) have their charm regardless so it's kind of a pick your poison type of thing.

GX is Scooby Doo meets YGO, also dinosaurs implants, vampires, aliums and SEIGI NO MIKATA, KAIBAMAN! I think it's one of the least memorable series overall and the level of sheer stupidity and bad writing is either entertaining or extremely irritating.

5D is kinda like the Gundam Seed of the series, the plot kinda nosedives in a few arcs though. Also literal card games on motorcycles, sex cults, ACCEL SYNCHRO and Jack being Van.

Zexal should be watched for the great animation standards, Four and Vector, everything else blows, it's absolutely terrible.

Arc V...it's hot garbage if you ask me, it's like Zexal but with shittier animation, shittier pacing and marginally better main characters.
