"Deconstruction" has a technical, literal definition, and a colloquial one.

99% of references to "Eva is a deconstruction" refer to the latter, while the remainder are poor attempts at shoehorning it into the former solely because people have pointed out "that's not what deconstruction means".

The colloquial definition of "deconstruction" that people are operating on when discussing Eva is "avoids or inverts some of the most common clichés". That's it.

They're dumb and you should laugh at them but for completely different reasons. Every show fucks around with its clichés to some extent, and Eva isn't even one of the earlier or more egregious examples of it.

... You know what I think? I think people just throw around words like that in order to elevate Evangelion above other anime. They want to make it seem better, more important than the shows that came before it while also degrading shows that came after it as being "clearly inspired" by it.

I like Eva, but it didn't invent a lot of the things people attribute to it. Those same things were present in older shows and OVAs. Old or obscure anime that fans at the time wouldn't have experienced or even heard of. All Eva did was take those exact same elements and popularize them. That's it. Not saying it's a bad show, but not as revolutionary as some claim.

Can't really blame TVtropes for it. The modern use of the word has been in the culinary world since the late-'90s which itself is a rather trendy industry and prone to use of buzzwords. There are probably other fields of interest that have also used the word in that way.

There can be more than one attempt at making a deconstruction. Doesn't matter though the people who claim Eva is a deconstruction are just too insecure to admit they actually liked a mecha anime and have to come up with some ridiculous reason on why it's different from anything else.
