The Origins changes this by retconning it directly. Kai and Sayla have a storyline together right when he decides to become a journalist. He visits her estate to check up on her/get information and wants to ask her to help him the whole time but can't bring himself to do it Then just as he is boarding the plane to leave she tells him, that she will take care of them. Kai starts crying in gratitude and then proceeds to be her only contact and fuck toy all the way through to Unicorn. She also beats a team of zeon nationalists in a game of polo as a non-violent way to convince them she should stay on earth and out of politics. I really like it.
