Gundam 00 is a good starter series. Alternate universe to mainline (Universal Century) Gundam so you don't need any knowledge going in. Modern, very pretty and flashy, first season is pretty damn awesome although it suffers the Gundam AU curse of season 2 being shit. Good ending with the movie.

I'd suggest dipping your toes in with Thunderbolt as it's the current pinnacle of animation in the franchise, but you can only go down from there.

F91 is pretty good for that. It is a self contained movie. Just be warned, the plot goes by way too fast. Was supposed to be series, instead we got a movie covering part of the story. The animation and battles are really nice though.

0083 is a good place to go as well, but it really helps to have the context of at least the original mobile suit gundam.

It's fine. Just keep an open mind and pay attention to things and everything will work itself out. There's some great mech porn, if nothing else.

And remember to NOT skip the credits in S2 and the movie because for strange reasons they decided to put plot-relevant scenes at the end of each episode.
