No he didn't; his relationship with Minmay was far more interesting than with Misa. With Misa, the two were basically just classic tsunderes to each other. Hikaru and Minmay, on the other hand, were more complex. They start off really close because of drastic circumstances and then aren't really sure what to make of each other when those circumstances come to an end. Hikaru makes some attempts to get back together, but you can see that he loses interest more and more as Minmay either doesn't get the hint or ignores him and has the whole thing with Kaifun, culminating with the "I love... I loved you" scene. That scene struck me more than any scene involving Misa did. Of course after that, the two don't associate much until Minmay finally realizes that Kaifun is a piece of shit and leaves him, with nowhere to go but back to Hikaru. Hikaru more or less immediately rekindles his feelings for her now that she finally wants him back, but he has the whole thing with Misa going on now. And the really interesting part is that you never get the sense that his feelings for Minmay go away after that. He didn't so much choose Misa as Minmay chose Misa for him by removing herself from the picture again, not wanting to ruin a thing for her only remaining true friend

As a whole, I think that's a lot more complex and powerful than "They're bitchy at first, but then they're forced to kiss and suddenly they like each other" even if Minmay herself isn't very likable. Then again, I didn't like Hikaru or Misa much either. But anyway, Macross did actually go with the more developed relationship in Frontier and had more to do for the loser, so I think they handled that part better. Too bad they handled nothing else better.

Minmay's alright, but she's not good for Hikaru. Their relationship flip-flopped even though it had a strong start, she's pretty flighty, and while she's a sweet girl she needs more support in a relationship. She also doesn't get Hikaru as someone in the military, which is an important aspect considering he's an ace pilot that's vital to the lives and defense of Earth and the fellow remaining humans living on it. She's not selfish, but she's small-minded.
