As far as I know, Angels don't really eat. If they do I remember something mentioned about the S2 engine, which Unit 1 took into itself, converting matter to energy with 100% efficiency or something like that. The only Evas ever seen eating are Unit 1 and 5-13, all of which had S2 engines

In the manga they explain it by saying Eva 01 only 'ate' Zeruel to acquire its S2 engine. The eating was probably symbolic and an artistic decision to showcase how barbaric and vicious the Eva series truly is.

Also, given the nature of the S2 engine, I don't think Evas or Angels need to eat. IIRC the only reason the Evas had that umbilical cable and 5 minute runtime was because of the lack of an S2 engine, which allows Angels to live forever, so to speak.
