In terms of what was missed:
SDF Macross has a happy ending and humanity goes out into the stars.
Lot more Zentraedi wondering about the miclone's culture and not so much about how they can't do shit or are slaves to the Robotech Masters.
No mention of the Robotech Masters.
No sequel hooks.
Things are constantly getting better, not worse.

I've never seen Souther Cross or MOSPEADA, but it follows most the Macross leg pretty closely. It doesn't start diverging from the SDF storyline until the last arc after Boddole is defeated and the Zents start assimilating with the miclones. They start transitioning into the other shows and that's when the narrative starts to become a hot mess.

In terms of censorship like violence and that sort of thing, there's surprisingly very little changed for an 80s adaptation. Mostly just some of the bloodier shots and Minmay's ass. Where Robotech really screwed the pooch was the story, specifically starting near the end of Macross where it stops being a psuedo dub of SDF and starts trying to tie unrelated shows together. Like Carl Macek might have been a pretty decent dub director for the time, but fuck was he a terrible writer.

Really though the main reason /m/ hates Robotech so much is less the show itself and more the company that owns it being a piece of shit.

Funny thing, even as I was watching Robotech for the first time with an open mind and running head-long into mountains of plotholes and continuity issues, one thing that I kept thinking about on Dana's blond hair color was the "Well, in Macross their kids had different hair colors, so maybe-" notion until I realized Dana had green hair as a baby. I tried to rationalize that maybe she could've dyed it, but she showers with that hair all the time. Her sister is even depicted with blue hair in her freaky magical protoculture vision, and then she's depicted with purple hair in Shadow Chronicles. There's just no fucks given here.

Its about as sad as that Love Live Alive 'movie' that managed to out-retcon Shadow Chronicle's retcon of how New Generation ended. At first they try to reboot the series with SC claiming that only Scott and Ariel were present during the conclusion of the fighting and then they tried to re-edit the Love Live Alive OVA as canon which essentially contradicts Shadow Chronicles, especially having one of the omitted characters (Belmont) as the main character and narrator.

For a handful of people who fight tooth and nail to make this franchise their craft, they seem to care fuck all about continuity and quality control. Goddamn.

DR Movie (the studio that animated this film) really isn't bad as an assistant animation studio and they have tons of shows on their resume from American productions to Macross....So what happened, exactly? The sad thing is that Shadow Chronicles was ok and it gets away from the Macross wars that Harmony Gold clings to. Nobody really cares about Mospedea which is pretty much all that Shadow Chronicles needs. There's far more Robotech fans than meets the eye. They're much older now and aren't as active as they used to be in the 90's and 00's, but they're still clinging to it.

Hopefully by mid-century, there won't be any left because the original fans are senior citizens and any new fans don't give a fuck anymore after decades of false promises and dickery from HG.

The problem is two-fold.

One : the only original creative piece to come out of the Robotech franchise is the novelization by McKinney. You can love it or hate it, but the original 16 or so volumes really gave an epic feal to Robotech. Nothing the tv series ever managed to do. Of course after Yune basically retconned out of continuity the novels this part went to shit.

Two : what few Robotech fans are left, cling to the Macross Saga part of Robotech. They don't give a rat's ass about Southern Cross and/or Mospeada. They want more adventures of Rick, Lisa and Minmei. Literally the only thing the fuck-tards at HG can't deliver (we all know the reasons).

So the Robotech fans have nowhere to turn to, except buy for the n-th time a dvd compilation of the tv show. I mean at this point in time it's not even funny to pity them anymore. They're just a dying species. Let them pass in peace.

Shadow Chronicles is the living proof HG doesn't care one bit about Mospeada. HG wants the only thing they cannot have and are willing to take what few fans are left for a ride. Well it's a winning proposition as long as those fans fork out the greenies for some subpar merchandise or the same old dvd tv show. But the truth is there is never going to be a decent Mospeada era sequel to Robotech. Seriously HG does not have the talent nor the will to invest the necessary funds to make it happen. The only ones oblivious to this are the few fans left.

Actually, THE most original thing to come out of Robotech was Robotech 3000 way back in 1999. It was set 3000 years in the future, far away from any copyrighted material that HG couldn't use. It was all new characters, the alien races that Carl Macek and the Japanese cooked up, and mecha that was VERY loosely based off of Mospeada ships. Macek even produced and wrote it.

However, when Harmony Gold showcased it at a con, the entire Robotech fanbase just went into viral raging neckbeard mode because none of their beloved Macross characters and vehicles were in it, it was CGI, and nothing really happens in the teaser at all.

Seriously, your franchise runs on transforming machines and space battles and your intro to a new installment is 3 minutes of chit-chat with an unarmed investigation team fighting with construction equipment?

This thing failed with people so hard that not only are fans shitting all over it despite Carl Macek being on it, Harmony Gold themselves only ever bring it up to make cmments like "Well, things are taking forever with our movie/tv show, BUT REMEMBER everyone, there was once Robotech 300! Yeah, we definately don't want to do that again." For a man that the Robotech community adores so much as a visionary, they sure love tossing him and his stuff in the gutter.
