Basically, this is Nagano's vision for what an FSS anime adaptation would have looked like at the time. More simple character designs, detailed backgrounds, and more oil stains on the Mortar Headds. Compare this to the actual movie by Sunrise and you can see how different his vision was, it was much less of a shoujo fantasy and more of a fairy tale war epic. It's interesting to see how his vision has changed from back then to now, with Gothicmade (the movie) being his current vision for an FSS anime adaptation.
These images are from an artbook Nagano made sometime in the late 80s well before the release of the FSS movie.

And that's it.
Personally I don't think it's any better than the movie's visuals, but it is more faithful to the manga.
I've never liked the way he draws people, but everything else looks fantastic as expected.

I mean they're obviously cell paintings
Why do people give a damn about this literal who?

I wonder whyyour bait is so weak

that doesn't necessarily mean it's for an anime
iirc Gaia Gear and some other "anime-ish" productions would get stuff like that to help flesh it out even if they had no relation to any animated products. There's some stuff done with normal lineart and cel type work in the Merchandise of Les MS Girls book and that never got animated ;_;

>that doesn't necessarily mean it's for an anime
Obviously not since one wasn't made (by Nagano), but it is a proof of concept of what an anime version would look like. Same with all the old Newtype art for stuff like Sentinel and Gaia Gear. Anime back then was just cels layered over backgrounds. That's all this is.

I really wish Nagano would make an anime in this day in age. even if its just adapting his FSS. he has an interesting way he writes and designs mechs.

Ugh, sure.

Gothicmade
>>15015066
I always preferred this version of the Bang Doll. Looks a lot more like a war machine than the normal one.

>Gothicmade
Would be nice if we could actually, you know, watch it.
>>15015877
Interesting enough, the GTM version added the horn back in.
>>15015861
well aware of gothicmade, we will never get to see it so why even bother hoping to?
>>15015877
>Looks a lot more like a war machine than the normal one.
Most of the 80s MH were more like war machines than the newer ones. You can even see oil stains on them which you will never find on a Gothicmade. It's from the 90s onward that Nagano started giving them high heels and make them skinny like fashion models, and now they all have translucent armor for whatever reason. I don't have anything against it but the designs clearly evolved over time.

You can tell. The colors used here are really dated even compared to the FSS movie. Feels like something from the DYRL era but with less shading.

Doesn't make it look any less dated.

What are stylistic differences?

That's not what I said, and stop being such a defensive shitbag.

This must be your first FSS thread.

How does it look dated?

How come Nagano never became a director? And I don't mean in an indie movie kind of way like Gothicmade, I meant like actually directing shows and movies like Tomino or Anno. It's not like he didn't have the connections for it.

>How come Nagano never became a director?
Because working in the anime industry is fucking awful, and he's financially more well-off than almost any anime director out there since he owns his own franchise with no executive meddling like Bandai. Oshii even said many times that he kept directing movies not because he liked it, but because he needed the cash.
Just look at his peers who are still directing. All of them are miserable.

Jebus, she looks like a bad Deviantart OC

She looks better than your favorite character design.
