If Kio didn't count then I'd probably go for Shinn, if only because he attacked a melee specialist mobile suit with leg beam sabers by kicking it, and that's really, really stupid. Same as Kio may not count though, it's possible to argue Shinn doesn't count. In which case I'd probably pick Bellri. Not that I think he's unskilled, but he seemed to rely on the technological superiority of the G-Self a few times, like against the Yggdrassil and the few bits of real creativity he displayed (that I can recall) didn't really work out for him. Like when he attacked the G-Self using a Recten and Aida was rebuffing him until the G-Self stopped working right.

Who do you think is the weakest main character pilot out of interest?

I haven't seen any of season two, and besides the show isn't actually finished yet - so I didn't count him either.

I would say it's among:

-Kio, Banana: Overly reliant on their broken suits. They both haven't gotten to face a MS with comparable power that they actually took down without some space magic or assistance. Though Kio has X-Rounder abilities that he's good enough with to support his pacifist style and took down the Vagan Gear SID in a one-on-one so he's got more feats under his belt than Banana whose most impressive acts are magic plot powers completely unrelated to piloting skill.

-Shiro or Kou: They are really standard. Little to no Newtype abilities to use as crutches.

-Chris: Almost lost to a rookie in a Zaku that was already in terrible shape and cobbled back into working conditions in a week. Granted Bernie did make preparations to get an advantage.

Judau was even from the beginning more skilled than the rest of the Neo Zeon lackey's he went up against. And while you could argue it was because of the Zeta's Gundam performance ( and later on the ZZ) Fa did comparatively worse than him even though she at that point was much more experienced.

I had figured that Fa's performance was actively suffering because she was conflicted and traumatized over what happened to Kamille, and it was obvious to Bright that she wanted to go back to Kamille and if she stayed on the Argama, she'd meet her end rather quickly.

So there would be a difference between "Tsundere Fa who wants to prove she can fight as well as Kamille" and "PTSD Fa who was horrified over the atrocities of the previous war and watched a lot of her friends die or become vegetables".

But what did Banana's Newtype stuff do that actually made him a better pilot? Kio's X-Rounder stuff let him control his funnels with a high degree of precision across the entire battlefield and the most I recall Banana's Newtypism being capable of doing is amping up his Mobile Suit's specs even more ludicrously high, not anything that really enhanced his reaction time or anything.

More the Unicorn than just Banana alone, but the NT-D system lets him hijack enemy funnels, use his brain as a wetware CPU for the Unicorn's AI to kill the enemy Newtype, generate psycofields for propulsion and defense, and disable attacking mobile suits altogether.

If I recall right it was also implied he's gone through some Cyber Newtype-like treatments prior to Unicorn's start to be as good at picking up piloting as he is.

I don't think Bellri is actually that weak. He's very creative in the way he fights (using his auxiliary armor as a distraction, grabbing the rifle to avoid getting shot, generally knowing how to optimally use his equipment). He only appears weak because he intentionally goes for subduing strikes rather than killing blows (going into melee with a long-range pack because sniping at range was too dangerous for his opponents). At the last episode he completely out-fucking-skilled Mask in the duel.

Banagher is honestly complete trash (as he should be since he got the least experience piloting). He's just sitting there letting the AI and the superior speccs do all the work. I can't actually remember any fights where he doesn't plain overpower the enemy using the Unicorn's brute strength.
