Zeta is shit and it's not dark at all. Just because a few characters die don't make a show dark. In any case the deaths were poorly handled as expected of tomino.

Who, Four ? We never actually see her die. She just gets shot and gives a farewell message to Kamille as she betrays the Titans.

Zeta isn't good just for having some character deaths. It is more about the oppressive and neurotic atmosphere that the character interactions, the drugding ( but intricate and subtle when you notice the small details) plot that shows the conflict gradual become more and more desperate, the major difficulty that the protagonists are always having dealing with the enemy aces like Yazan, and the music, that all work together to create the distinctive atmosphere that makes Zeta so great. The death's add on to this a bit, but are not the main feature.

I'm 20, and I thought I was going to hate Zeta Gundam, because it is an old anime from the 80s and current anime has great CG enhanced animation that makes old anime look really bad, but Zeta Gundam was fantastic. It may be my favorite anime series of all time, better than Evangelion.

Newby to Gundam here, working my way through the series chronologically.
Just getting to Zeta now, about 8 episodes in and I'm liking it more than 0079, although I did very much enjoy 0079. (Although, 0079 around the middle was a real grind to get through, it felt like MOTW show with robots, but it thankfully picked up later)
The jump in animation/art-quality is honestly amazing.
But obviously I'm only 8 episodes in of a 50 episode series, so there's a lot of room for things to go bad, but so far I'm really liking it.

I appreciated Zeta Gundam for what it portrayed, the absolute mess that Earth and the Colonies were in following a war that saw the population of humanity literally decimated, if the show had featured the 0078 characters saddling up exactly the way they had when they were kids (and they were kids in 0078) then it would have felt weird, like no time had passed. The 0078 characters are clearly disillusioned and suffering from the trauma of the war. The multiple factions made the show a little hard to follow simply because you weren't sure who to root for, the Titans were made to be plainly evil but the AEUG kinda came off as terrorists, the EFSF was only a shadow of what it had been in 0078, that's something that contrasts sharply with 0078 - even when the line between good and evil blurred, it was still obvious that Amuro was the hero. Root for him and you're fine. You did not really have that in Zeta, i do agree that the mobile suit designs were off. I liked how the EFSF had absorbed the Zeonic research teams and that explained the presence of Hi-Zacks and some of the other Titan prototypes, I appreciated the evolution of the GM line in the GM-II and Nemo units. But other than the Zeta Gundam and the Hyaku Shiki, a lot of the new suits looked kind of dumb. Bound Doc is a great example - it looks needlessly complicated in a "Turn A" kind of way. Curious OP - have you watched ZZ Gundam yet? If not, I think watching that may inform your lasting impression of Zeta

Zeta Gundam to me is the ultimate example of the creator's vision being compromised by the studio's commercial interests. It simply wasn't possible for such a complex and dark story to be properly told in the form of an 80s mainstream mecha anime that the studio viewed primarily as a vehicle for selling model kits.

The need to have a robot fight in every single episode crushed the storytelling completely. The way that logic and rational character behavior goes out the window as the script ties itself in knots to contrive reasons for the same set of characters to have the same battle episode after episode is really depressing.

Look at how well A New Translation connects with Char's Counter Attack where any major plot hole that was created by the TV version going in is addressed by the movies.

Jerid's death was fitting - he became more and more irrelevant as time went on. As he got consumed by his rivalry with Kamille, Kamille kind of just moved on. It is a great example of negatively symmeric character development. Kamille progressed as Jerid regressed. By the end he was nothing, and he died as nothing, just as he deserved.

Kamille got fried because Scirroco is a mean mother fucker. It fit the narrative quite well imo, the Gryps war was supposed to be brutal as fuck.

It's not so much that we were supposed to forget it and it's not so much that Jerid forgot about it as that he lacked realistic expectations.
In his position saying something like "I'm gonna become the leader" is not very different than a child saying "I'm gonna be the president" or "I'm gonna be an astronaut".
Jerid is a good, honest kid and he is actually not quite as untalented as some people here would like to believe but he is naive and lacks an overview of the situation - he honesty wants to fulfill his duty, believes that the Titans are "the good guys" and that there is such a thing as "good guys" and "bad guys". With this sort of mindset he could never become more than a tool. When reality doesn't fit your expectations it's only natural to become frustrated and confused. It's a sad fate but it's definitely not something he deserved. Those are just the ways of the world.

You gotta look at what she was doing for the 10+ episode before that. It is amazing how much of her dissatisfaction gets subtly foreshadowed before the actual incident, especially through her conversations with Fa and her relationship with Char. Her betrayal does'nt come out of the blue at all if you pay attention to her words and actions prior to it.

Recently got into gundam and watching it as it came out. 0079 was genius. Zeta so far is more brilliant. I just hope they bring zakus back an masse cause they had ballin ass design. Just got to Zeta gundam and it looks sexy as fuck tho so still digging it hard.

I went in pretty hyped after the brilliant ending 0079 had, but zeta was a real slog to get through, by the end of the show I was so tired of all the characters their shit that I couldn't wait for zeta to be done so that I never have to see them again.

I feel it has everything that made 0079 so good. Unexplainable relationships the get explained in between direct dialog. Character development that shows through action and indirect dialog. Better animation than 0079. Loving it so far.

Zeta has this very weird and subtle style of storytelling embedded in it; It is the kind of shows where character arcs kind of stew in the background as the war ( which is kind of monotonous) continues to drag on and slowly increase in desperation and intensity. I find the second watch through is best because you tend to see all the subtle foreshadowing in future arcs better that way. The characters themselves are often quite multi-faceted and just bizarre and with enough internal conflict to make them interesting.

It is all about watching all the individuals fall apart and let their demons get the better of them as the war drags on. I think the directing was great, and the general atmosphere was very anxious and oppressive. I always felt at the edge of my seat in the battles because guys like Yazan were always real threats that even Kamille would have to retreat from. It also expands on newtypes allot which is interesting, has some very inventive battles at times ( though sometimes they are clearly filler and don't have that much effort into them) where a very large variety of quirky stuff happens to make them stand out. The soundtrack and animation are great and all in all Tomino seemed to hit his mark in making this oddly oppressive and dense show full of fucked up people repeating their mistakes and perishing due to them. Oh, and the Mecha design is top tier.

Zeta the series is excellent. Zeta the movies is kinda fun once you've already seen the series, but it's not a good way to introduce yourself to it. Go watch the series. It is probably the best of Gundam. It's not only worth it, it's worth getting into Gundam solely for Zeta.

I didn't enjoy Zeta, after episode 20 it got way too slow and overly dramatic, a lot of focus on retarded characters, almost every woman in Zeta is irrational because the plot needs them to be, at the end I didn't care about everybody dying, since I only cared for like two or three characters
