The Turn A being used as a washing machine was thematic in a few ways. First of all one of the themes of the show is that humanity has forgotten the weight of its destructive weapons. For example, there's Poe who fires fucking massive laser beams at WW1 technology, wrecking their capital city out of stupidty, and the whole bit where nobody seemed to understand how awful the nukes Loran was carrying. The moon race people were just ignorant from never having to fight in so long and the earth people were just ignorant because they were uneducated.

The fact that somebody can use the Turn A for menial tasks means that technology doesn't always have to be used for massive destruction, like how in the past they used the Turn A to kill all technology.

It also happened in episodes with good character stuff like Diana experiencing what the conflict on Earth was literally doing to the people by trying to volenteer as a nurse and fainting and shit if I'm remembering right, so it had some good character moments. I'm sure there might have been filler I'm forgetting though.

Turn A is honestly pretty great. The pacing early on is unfitting for a TV show sure, but since it's finished airing that's basically a nonissue at this point.

Loran uses the Turn-A for non military purposes 4 or 5 times during the first half of the show (as a cow transport, train tracks, washing machine, laundry line twice and probably others I'm forgetting) and is willing to give it up to Sochie early on as well as relieved when it's taken by Gym later on but knows he needs to go get it back despite not wanting it (as pointed out by Dianna). Corin shouts about how Loran should be the one to defeat the Turn-X using the Turn-A just before he dies despite his earlier hatred of the Turn-A at least in part because he's seen how Loran isn't just using the Turn-A to cause destruction and chaos like whatever he saw the Turns do in the past (and he had to have given he recognizes the smell of the nanomachines at work). There's also discussion of the idea that it doesn't matter if the Turn-A was the cause of the Moonlight Butterfly apocalypse in the past because the people using technology are the ones who direct it and decide whether its' good or bad. The use of the Turn-A for more every day stuff ties in to that idea that you can use something that is in theory (or has even proved in practice) horrific for better things.

It's my favourite Gundam series story wise, the mech design is kinda meh all around except for the Turn units, and it has a very slow pace but I find that a nice change from pretty much every other Gundam, It has a lot of charm and is just all around enjoyable

I thought I was the only one that thought this. It might have been more tolerable had it been shorter. People seem to love it for its character drama but it was decent at best and mediocre most of the time, and it just dragged on and on.

I felt like the focus should have shifted and wanted the plot to pick up, but it never really felt like it did until they got to the moon, and that was toward the very end. And even then, meh.

That's the best way to describe Turn A. Meh.

I see people treat it like a piece of art, a giant robot cartoon that's too good to be a giant robot cartoon, but I swear I'll never understand. If a provocative think piece is what you're looking for, you could do so much better than this. And if you want a fun giant robot show with good drama, this ain't it either. Looking back I feel like I finished it out of obligation more than entertainment.

Speaking as someone who loves Turn-A, not just as Gundam show, or even as an anime, but as a piece of entertainment from any medium, I don't really think someone who dislikes it is really best placed to tell me whether I should like it or not. I can completely understand why someone wouldn't like it, because it is a slow show with rather static characters and there's not much focus on the giant robots. I still love it regardless though, because it ticks so many boxes for me. I'd never consider it a think piece personally, but I do find it a very fun giant robot show. I love the art, I love the designs. I love the characters. I love the setting. I love the backstory. I just love a lot of things about it. You don't. That's fine. No-one's forcing you to despite popular perception that there's a hive mind. Trying to imply other people shouldn't love it because you don't though, or that they should love other things instead is just as pointless as someone trying to push you to love it though.

WaDoms are obviously War of the Worlds Tripod-equivalents, WaDs are clearly meant for construction, and most of the excavated mobile suits harken back to various periods in Gundam History, giving each suit a chance to be something different than it once was.

There's no ring shown or mentioned in any of them. I'm pretty sure there's no ring shown or mentioned in the entire show up to the finale honestly, not even when Gavane is marrying Sochie - since the dress is their big focus, not a ring. So, if the ring isn't in any of those moments, and that's all the moments I could find even remotely relevant, where is the ring? I like this scene for a couple of reasons, but I think it's significant since Loran is fairly often accused of never growing, of never standing up to Guin and/or of never standing up for himself (and his name) in general. I've decided that I won't watch Turn A until I've watched Wing and X. (I've already watched all of Universal Century and G.) And I've decided that I won't watch Wing until I finish War and Peace, because I've heard Wing is based off of it. Perhaps that's silly. Probably. Maybe Wing's War and Peace references are complete throwaways. On the other hand, maybe the major character arcs of Wing will give away where characters like Pierre, Andrei and Natasha end up. And I know I don't even have to watch Wing or X to watch Turn A, but I want to get the "full effect" out of everything. Maybe I'll be able to catch up to this group watch around episode 20 or so.

Dianna was always his girl, Loran only stays with Dianna because she's dying due to the complications / combination of technical old age and lots of cryo time. She's still the rightful queen of his people, and he has been nothing but devoted and loyal to her - as such, he's probably serving at her pleasure as her deathbed butler instead of settling down with the woman who loved him. The fact that both Dianna and Loran stay in separate rooms pretty much drives their platonic relationship home. He's merely giving his monarch a comfortable, peaceful end, and that's the duty he's taken on as a proud member of the Moonrace. Kihel became royalty, which is what she always wanted to begin with. And Harry gets to protect her in his pants. He's the real MVP here.
It is heartbreaking to see Sochie so wracked with grief and pain, but to be honest, she would have probably had a hell of a lot more pull in that scenario if she hadn't spent all of her time treating Loran like dog shit. I mean, if someone treated me like God's perfect asshole for the course of a few years and then professed their love for me, I'd have done the same shit he did. Let her down easy, tell her that I'll come back from her once she gets all that bitterness out of her system. Because by the look of things, Dianna didn't have all that long to live. She got really winded on the moon, and then in the epilogue she's walking through the snow with a cane for support. She's on her last days, and both she and Loran know it. It's bittersweet, but genuine. And because of this, it's become my favorite Gundam series to date. It's got loads of problems with pacing and plot cohesiveness, but the focus on character development as the driving factor really set this series a world apart for me, and especially so at the end.

I don't know if it's the best, but it's my favorite. I love everything about it. I love that it's a mix of happy and sad Tomino. I love the music. I love every single character. I love the politicking and the setting. I love Tomino's storytelling style that forces the viewer to be an active, critical thinker to really get what's going on. I love the music. Good lord do I love the music. I loved every minute, from the very first opening chants of "Turn A, Turn" to Loran wishing Dianna good night in a separate bed. I love how it concludes. I love the Syd Mead bizarre mech designs that are a perfect fit for an American Gundam and also a scifi in a past setting. I love the romance in this show and how uniquely that plays out. I love how every character has a deep personality and series of motivations and that informs their actions in a logical manner rather than things happening because of lazy plot convenience. I love how it's the last traditionally animated Gundam show and how beautiful every hand-painted cell looks. I love the pacing of the show that takes its time to establish the characters and setting without ever forgetting it's an action show that needs its mechs to be doing things on a regular basis. I love all the little tiny details and actions the characters make that make them feel alive. I love the little slice of life moments like Sochie playing with dolphins, to transporting a cow for some desperate would-be farmers, to Loran using the Turn-A to accelerate the arduous task of laundry that reminds the viewers that tools aren't inherently evil, it's how we use them. I love that it's a Gundam that has a sense of humor and where the protagonist cares more about ending the conflict rather than how edgy he feels all the time. I just love that it's a show that truly transports you to another place and time that can only exist in anime and makes full use of the medium. I love Turn-A because Turn-A loves life and makes me feel like I want to love life.

It's my favourite Gundam series story wise. The mech design is kinda meh all around except for the Turn units, and it has a very slow pace but I find that a nice change from pretty much every other Gundam. It has a lot of charm and is just all around enjoyable.
