Not sure how they are treated in current canon, but according to the novelization of ZZ, the Islamic Zeon movement dates back to the invasion of Africa when Zeon was deploying troops from space and Odessa to the continent.

Due to issues with the local tribals attacking supply caravans and mutilating/eating Zeon and Federal troops in the region, Zeon finally sent a commander by the name of Desert Rommel to try and gain the support of the African population that had been hassling them. Due to Rommels ethnicity and some basic knowlege of the local religion, Rommel was able to convince many of the tribes that Gihren Zabi was the reincarnation of their messiah figure and that aiding Zeon would allow them to regain their lands from the tyrannical Federation who had attempted to exterminate their way of life. Within a matter of months, many of the tribes formed into pro-Zeon militias and began to attack any non-Zeon forces in the region. As the war began to deteriorate and many Zeon forces began to go into hiding on Earth and evacuating back into space, Rommel was requested to remain Earthside to maintain control and to await reinforcements from Side 3 to deploy more troops to him. Rommel and his own unit would fight a savage fight alongside the African Militias to stop the Federation advance into Africa, but without any new units and supply's, the battle to hold Africa seemed hopeless. That was until Rommel finally learned an HLV shipment directly from Side 3 was being deployed to Africa to reinforce his already devastated unit. Upon arriving at the HLV, he found enough Mobile Suits to field an entire squadron of pilots, but no pilots to use them. After being informed the units were being dropped off as a result of them being useless in space and that deploying any manpower to Africa would be pointless, Rommel was left with only one option, he would field these new units to parts of the militias to make up for his own loses. Despite the newly deployed units under Rommels command, he realized many of the men serving in the militias lacked experience and discipline in Mobile Suit operations, forcing him to call upon the most sadistic and radical of all the Islamist tribes, the men that would eventually come to be called the Blue Unit and the heads of the African Liberation Front in ZZ.

After convincing the unit to align with him, along with transferring a large portion of his reaming supplies over to the Blue Unit Tribe, they began a savage campaign against the Federation in Central and North Africa. After a nearly fatal blow to the Federations mop-up forces in North Africa, Rommel has managed to unify the entire continent under a single flag of Zeon and was already preparing for a full scale counter attack on Odessa in Mid 0080. However, a single logic fault would destroy Rommels dreams of striking back against the Federation one last time.

Basking in a major victory against the Federation, the Leader of the Blue Unit and Rommel began a lighthearted discussion of Islam, eventually leading into the discussion of Suni and Shia. Despite Rommels time with the Islamist forces in Africa, he had never truly grasped the concept of the two different sects and accidentally identified himself as a Shia muslim. While the Blue Unit's leader believed in Rommels story of Gihren Zabi being the reincarnation of the holy Messiah, he could never forgive Rommel for misinterpreting Allahs will, leading to a violent civil war between the Suni and Shia Zeon forces in the region.

in a single night, Rommels forces had been reduced to less than 20% of its original battle strength from its peak. Humiliated, Rommel would go into hiding with the original tribe that he had convinced to fight under him. The Blue Unit and its radicalized allies would continue to a violent jihad campaign against anyone who would conspire with the white demons of Earth and any who would fight alongside them. (cont)

In the end, Rommel would go into hiding for the next 8 years, waiting for a sign that Zeon would return to bring him back to his home on Side 3. While he would learn of Hamans arrival and prepared a unit to meet with her, he decided to prove his units worth by attacking the Argama, thus leading to his demise. His supporters would go into hiding, awaiting a chance to avenge their lost mentor and tribe leader.

The African Liberation Front would enter its most vicious and brutal phase during late 0088, when they began a savage ethnic cleansing campaign in the Middle East and Africa, swearing to kill every single Caucasian and non-zealous Islamist they encountered. During the conquest they would encounter Glemy Toto and had prepared to have him butchered and strung up as a message for others who enters the lands of the African Liberation Front. The shaman would stop this however and would sense Glemy as having a higher role in the grand scheme of Allahs glory, allowing him to serve alongside him as a commander. As the Blue Unit is wiped out and the African Liberation Front grows more radical, the Shaman of the Blue Unit in his dying breath proclaims Glemy to be the true holy son of the Messiah, Gihren Zabi. While doubtful of this revelation, Glemy leaves the ruined remains of the African Liberation Front a changed man. The shamans revelation eventually leads to Glemy gaining an implication of his linage of his birth from Haman, thus sowing the seeds of the Axis Zeon insurrection of 0089.

Anyone that says there's no new stuff is lying, there's alot of re-drawn, extended scenes, and some revised dialogue. And imo, they'll enrich your experience if you're familiar enough with the ovas, i've seen the ovasnumerous times so the added bits/extended scenes were always welcomed surprises. To someone that's not, i recommend the ovas, you won't appreciate the additions and the pacing noticeably suffers in the conversion. Sounds like certain lines were re-recorded too. The examples that come to mind: when Frontal and Banagher are fighting in Earth's gravity well there's a sincere gruff/anger in Frontal's voice when he says "Banagher, if you can hear me, STOP THIS", almost all of Bright's lines had a similar gruff, Mr. Gilboa's telling Tikva to take care of the family as he died, etc., None were present in the OVAs'. Too many extended scenes to re-count but Shamblo scenes were extended. They showed it in it's underwater cruise mode.

RE:0096, unfortunately it is a re-edited OVA cut into 20 min long episodes. I found also the issue that the endings of many episodes were rather abrupt due to simply cutting the OVAs which were self contained mini movies. Another problem I have with the RE0096 is that there are way too many spoilers in the OP and ED. I'm a bit confused (actually a lot) with the story. The animation and gundam fights were superb, but was Laplace's box really just that one line about giving newtypes preferential treatment into the government? Also why did Full Frontal just give up instead of giving us an epic battle of an ending? The whole story just really confused me, which is a shame since I think everything else was great.

In my understanding, yes Laplace's Box was simply that one line of autonomy for that new breed of human (Newtype). Though it may arguably be 'lame' and really come off as pointless in certain perspectives I find it a relatively human thing to keep secret (but this may be because I worship the ground Unicorn walks on as an OVA watcher). I mean, pettily speaking, this could throw a wrench in the Fed's plans hard Full Frontal giving up is also something discussed in previous threads when this aired and even via a Q&A but I'm on mobile so I can't link you that. IIRC he gave up due to the realization that people like Banagher and Mineva were going to inherit the world and old ideas that he had along with that history with Amuro and Lalah weren't always going to be the best. Maybe the youth of our time might not do the things we think are the best, but it's their world to make of it. That realization he got from Lalah putting a hand on his shoulder and Amuro's recomfirmation of 'Is this really okay?' sends it home that realization that there's nothing more he can do as pretty much a ghost/shell of the former Char Aznable. I didn't watch the recut though (episode one's pacing made me fear the worst), so I don't know if we saw the same things the same time but I hope that helped!

It's a fine, well crafted story with amaxing music, voice acting, and story telling. You do not, i repeat, don't need to be versed in much of UC history at all to appreciate it. The story does a god job of hand holding viewers through the important bits. Eg - when we first meet our hero Banagher he is sitting in a history lecture, this 30 second scene does alot of set up what you may be interested in regarding the history of conflict in UC.

So, I decided to get into Gundam a few months ago. Ordered the blu-ray collection of MSG and then after watching it I ordered all of Zeta, and then Char's Counter Attack. I disagree, if only because I don't feel she gets enough screen time, is victimized a little too heavily, and then gets fridged for the sake of a male character's character development. Her personality is also a little too stern and as a plot point, kind of a blank slate. I really like the whole Puru-clone grown up angle, but I wouldn't put her ahead of better developed, more nuanced characters that retain their agency and have far more magnetic personalities like Sayla Mass, Haman Karn, Emma Sheen, Cecily Fairchild, Dianna Soreil/Kihel Heim, and Sochie Heim.
