The story is completely disconnected from the games. The final boss of the games shows up for a cameo at one point but he basically just memes around for an episode or two, then fucks off randomly.

You should watch the Idolo movie though, Dolores is a direct sequel.

It actually kind of makes sense, the cockpit is away from the center of mass and it isn't out in the open like a head cockpit.

Much Love. Plot isn't mind blowing, but the cast is well worth it.

Props for James Links for not being another naive teen nor shell shocked veteran. He's had his definite failures, but puts in the effort to be better. And he still has charm and the mojo.

And everything thing else kind of falls into place. Dolores endearing, but prone to flights of fancy. The Links children provide some nice contrast to their erstwhile dad.

The antagonists are a little flat, but they play their part well enough. Expect to hear a lot of "John Carter!"

It's a fun adventure overall, working in a decent balance of levity and drama. It can venture into some surreal moments while also delivering some gut punches. It certainly is a recommend even if you never hear of the video game series.
