This is not realistic. Unless you think people have eyes like that (half as big as the face). You may like the character design but to say it's more realistic than those we see nowadays is wishful thinking. Take off those rose tinted glasses.
Now one point where I do prefer the old designs is when it comes to boobs. Old designs had more proportioned boobs (and the fucking animators drew the nipples). Nowadays female characters have to have gigantic boobs and no nipples. It's disgusting.

I don't think "realism" is what has changed. It is more so that modern anime faces are just boring and sterile, where older anime faces had allot more shading, hatching, interesting quirks ( I always found the shiny spot on the lower lip some animators did kind of interesting) a more interesting color palette, etc.

It still looks quite flat in comparison to >>15003163 . But it is nice, and I do think we are beginning to see a recovery. It was 2000-2010 where things were dire. This decade has been slowly improving imo, probably because the internet is giving everyone more access to good older anime to take inspiration from.

What I was trying to say is that the "it's just an [insert shape here]" argument can potentially be made for just about every drawing ever. The nose is pretty much a collection of rectangles and triangles.

Now, what do I think of that nose in particular? They probably shouldn't have made the lines on the bridge of the nose so darn obvious. Since this is an anime though, I don't think I am getting the full picture just by looking at a still screenshot.

Why the fuck does Japanese animation even have a particular style. Like you can tell when something is "anime". With other animation, and even some early anime is doesn't look at "samey". I don't care how much detail you put into something, if at the end of the day it looks "anime" it just ends up washing out what could have been cool animation and turns it into something that you expect. That and 90% of the plots and character interaction borders on autistic fantasies.
