Leiji and Ishiguro are the single reasons this anime was ground-breaking when it aired. Nishizaki was useless, there's nothing remarkable he ever did besides Yamato. Leiji went on to create Harlock, Galaxy Express, Queen Millennia and The Cockpit. Ishiguro went on to direct Macross, Megazone 23 and Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
Nishizaki? He produced a few shitty anime no one gives a crap about.

Nothing is sacred. But to be honest, it could've been much, much worst. A least I enjoyed 2199. Although no near as good as the original, it was funny enough and kept moe to a tolerable level. Macross Delta, in contrast, shoves moe down your throat since the very beginning, I watched one chapter and I regret it.
