His end is really sad though.

After Hathaway rebelled against the federation because of corruption and his regrets for killing Quess Bright has him executed(Quess newtype ghost appears in front of Hathaway and tells him that she never loved him anyways), except he doesn't know it was Hathaway.

He finds out and just crumbles, he finally gives up in trying to make the feddies improve from inside, there's no saving them so he just quits Gundam.

He was barely holding it together at times, and occasionally cracked, including the slap you mentioned, since he didn't know how to command or effectively direct crew, so I think "thrived" is too strong. He managed and grew in to the role though, becoming comfortable by Char's Counterattack.
