Wow, we're dead as fuck.

I've been watching through Orb finally. I'm actually enjoying it far more than I thought I would. The cast is pretty fun and likeable and Juggler's a fantastic villain.

VTL seems a little pointless beyond making sure an Ultra show has an Earth defense team. Shibukawa looks and acts more like a regular beat cop and I feel like that's what he should have been instead.
>>
Help me /m/. Orb's my first Ultraman and I'm having a blast. But I feel like there's a lot of throwbacks going over my head. In particular I just got to the part where some aliens said they had some kind of evil Ultraman as a trump card, and then the prescient girl saw Gai being forced to use it in the future, and I think maybe I'm missing some things.

You guys have suggestions on Ultras I should watch to brush up for Orb?

Those aliens who want to destroy the earth just sitting around their base and playing poker with their monster cards was great.
>>
>>14988847
>You guys have suggestions on Ultras I should watch to brush up for Orb?
Find a monster you like on the Ultra wikia and watch that series. No really, there is no bad Ultra series or movie, a few are mediocre, but nothing outright bad. /m/ hates the first Ginga series for some reason though.

The most recent episode of Orb
>/m/ hates the first Ginga series for some reason though
Most of the series isn't very good, but the fight with Taro and Dark Lugiel is a fantastic bit of fanservice.
>>
>Jobber slash
>>
>>14988860

Ginga is hilariously low budget with stiff actors who are obviously in their first roles. Ginga S is a significant step up in a lot of places, but it still isn't as good as it could be.

The whole Spark Doll thing is a good example of the low budget. Ginga and Victory's transformation items are the actual toys. They aren't even using props. Sometimes you can see the battery compartment covers and screws on the Ginga Spark and they don't even try to hide the fact that Spark Dolls are just sofubis.
>>
>>14988860
>/m/ hates the first Ginga series for some reason though.
I hate Ginga for two reason
The first is that it was pointless. None of the stories were good, or even serviceable. The characters were caricatures than characters. You can just watch Ginga S and realize how much of a difference there is between seasons.

Two is more personal. Ginga signals the official turn of the franchise from story-driven to toy-driven. I know that's the way toku has to survive now, and I know Monster Galaxy did obvious toy gimmicks years before, but for me, Ginga signaled the change, if not death, of a franchise.
X relived my worry somewhat with its tighter stories, but still.

>>14988847
Orb really doesn't have that much throwbacks in vein of Ginga and X. It does require you knowing the previous characters, but you can just as well know them by their archetypes:

Man - Face of the franchise
Tiga - Face of the franchise in Heisei
Mebius - Youthful fiery strength
Taro - Seasoned fiery strength
Jack - Dude with fancy toys
Zero - Dude with fancy skills
Zoffy - Big good (relatively, I know)
Belial - Big bad
>>
>>14989033
>Dude with fancy toys
Jack isn't a fancy Ultra
>>
>>14989033
>but for me, Ginga signaled the change, if not death, of a franchise.
Look at Orb and compare it to shit like EX-Aid if you think this franchise is anywhere near as bad as it could be with the over reliance on merchandise.
>>
I'm watching Ultraseven for the first time. Why does Dan use them little capsule monsters instead of just getting big?
>>
>>14989094

>>
>>14989080
It's the direction I'm worried about. KR's descend started with I think Den-O and ended up with what we have now
>>
>>14989186
Nope, Ryuki. Den-O is when it go more kid-friendly
>>
>>14988107
Ultrafags are the most autistic tokufags and tokufags are autistic as fuck and Tsuburaya was already taking too much risks with Orb so I wouldn't be surprised if VTL didn't exist on the original draft and Shibukawa was just a cop.

>story-driven
Was '66 Ultraman where some episodes were just attempts at random scifi and fantasy situations with Ultraman showing up near the end as a convenient way to resolve things quickly really "story-driven"?
>>
>>14989241
By story driven I meant Twilight Zone -esque individual episode story driven, not story arc driven like AHS
>>
>>14989952
Even looking at episodes individually, I wouldn't praise it for story when it falls back so much on Ultraman muscling through every problem instead of actually figuring out unique solutions. I know the show eventually addressed this, but well, it was only "eventually".

You don't really need to have watched anything from before Orb. Out of the Ultras used in the show I only watched Tiga and the Zero movies(on which Belial, the evil Ultraman, was the big bad). It's all explained and shown on the show itself and Gai makes an introduction to the old ultras at the end of each episode.

>>14988860
> /m/ hates the first Ginga series for some reason though.
Fights were awful, everything happened on the same set, the characters were boring, the plot was simple yet failed to do that well. It was my first Ultra series and wouldnt have gotten into the franchise at all after if it werent for the fact I read that ultrafags in /m/ also thought that it was a bad ultraman show that I was convinved to give other shows (and eventually Ginga S when it came out) a try.

>HOLLYWOOD, CA – December 5, 2016 – Japanese studio Tsuburaya Productions Company Ltd., and their U.S. distributor William Winckler Productions, Inc., have secured select U.S. theatrical play dates for their new, English dubbed, 50th Anniversary feature film of Ultraman, titled ULTRAMAN X THE MOVIE (劇場版 ウルトラマンX きたぞ!われらのウルトラマン, Gekijoo-ban Urutoraman X Kita Zo! Ware-ra no Urutoraman, 2016), along with their new English dubbed film ULTRAMAN GINGA S THE MOVIE ULTRAMAN GINGA S THE MOVIE (劇場版 ウルトラマンギンガS 決戦! ウルトラ10勇士!!, Gekijoo-ban Urutoraman Ginga S Kessen! Urutora 10 Yuushi!!, 2015), as a special “Double Feature” presentation starting January 8th, 2017.

>The Chicago Music Box Theatre, Cleveland Cinemas, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, Northwest Diversified Entertainment Theaters, Keystone Cinemas, and other U.S. theaters have signed on for the special limited theatrical screenings of the new Ultraman Movie Double Feature.

Trailer with dub voices embedded at link. Nothing outstanding, but leagues better than Malaysia dubs. It's a good dub. I'm hoping even if there is no showings within driving distance, that this means a home video release is imminent.

What does everyone think of the manga?

It's kind of middle of the road for me. I like the Ultra-Linebarrel-Iron-Man suit designs and the redesigned aliens, but the writing falls a little flat. It's enjoyable to a point, but it doesn't really feel like an Ultraman story.

It is a little strange. If Shinjiro is 16/17 and Hayata is as old as Susumu Kurobe is now, that means Shinjiro was born when Hayata was 60.

I want that to! Do you really think they liscenced this movie to only release to a few theaters dubbed for a week? This is surely getting a home video release with proper subs. the ones that were in English originally obviously, but other than that I think this dub of Joenis or however you spell it, THE (star) ULTRAMAN one. Not sure if this was the one packed in with the raw torrent with the Evil Emperor Barack or not

>Why do you assume this will even be on home video for English-speaking regions? The only ones from the last several years were Shout's releases licensed from Chaiyo-affiliated UM Corp.

Someone working at Funimation had hinted they would be releasing some of the Ultraman series that had aired at Crunchyroll. And it even if that doesn't come to pass, it will be available streaming, somewhere, because just about every Ultra show that falls outside the Chaiyo umbrella is already available. Tsubarya has been great to the fans, way better than Toei has ever been. For years before X, they had been putting episodes of Retsuden (including Ginga and Ginga S) for global viewing on youtube.

This isn't some lost show that no one can access, this is a series that is being actively promoted and licensed worldwide, that has had several home video releases, that is being picked up by Amazon for global distribution, etc, etc. It's BS for TVN to put this movie up, and I hope it doesn't get them in trouble.

There's enough shows missing that "just about every" seems like an overstatement.

>For years before X, they had been putting episodes of Retsuden (including Ginga and Ginga S) for global viewing on youtube.
Without subs, so I wouldn't say this is actually related to whether or not anything is even getting subtitles, let alone for home video.

Unless you count the odd Southeast Asian releases, English home video Ultraman was all very long ago from licenses that have since expired.

> that is being picked up by Amazon for global distribution, etc, etc

They also said that about KR Amazons, yet there's nothing resembling a release date.

>It's BS for TVN to put this movie up, and I hope it doesn't get them in trouble.
There's not much reason they'd be in trouble before the groups just uploading Crunchyroll rips.

What rule? Besides Chaiyo-related releases, subtitled Ultraman on Western/NA home video has mainly consisted of Funimation's Tiga sets and Image releasing a few crossover movies. Not exactly enough to establish a rule.

The Ginga theater special

>There's enough shows missing that "just about every" seems like an overstatement.
Out of the the tweleve main series that Tsubaraya is able to distribute, CR currently airs nine of them. Out of the three remaining, Dyna has aired on Hawaiian TV with subs in the last few years

>Without subs, so I wouldn't say this is actually related to whether or not anything is even getting subtitles, let alone for home video.
You're being pedantic, this was only to show that Tsubaraya has embraced their overseas fans.

Either you or someone else just mentioned the Shout/BMI releases. They are licensed via Chaiyo, but it shows that there is an audience who will buy these sets. Shout also has a working relationship with Tsubaraya for some mst3k movies, and had tried to licence Ultraseven through them.

Ultras in the prime universe don't get Color Timers until they are chosen as soldiers for the Space Garrison (which is why Seven, originally just a cartographer, doesn't have one). I would assume it works the same way in the Orb universe.

>The Ginga theater special
One theater special isn't exactly enough precedent to say "they'll definitely release this particular movie".

>Out of the the tweleve main series that Tsubaraya is able to distribute,
Of course it seems like fewer are missing if you discount some others. Plus this doesn't address apparent differences between shows and movies. (Ginga's being there might have something to do with how it's only one they can present as a numbered episode).

>Dyna has aired on Hawaiian TV with subs in the last few years
Assuming you're not mistaken and thinking of the California broadcast back in 2010, Hawaii is a market unlike the rest of the U.S. when it comes to toku.

>You're being pedantic, this was only to show that Tsubaraya has embraced their overseas fans.
It was still without subs, and actually predates the big-scale subbed streaming, so using that to claim subbed streaming is inevitable is still jumping to conclusions. The YouTube channel and Crunchyroll licenses are almost certainly dependent on different factors.

>Either you or someone else just mentioned the Shout/BMI releases. They are licensed via Chaiyo, but it shows that there is an audience who will buy these sets. Shout also has a working relationship with Tsubaraya for some mst3k movies, and had tried to licence Ultraseven through them.
I was specifically referring to those, and even if we assume they'd be working with Tsuburaya in an ideal timeline without the lawsuit stuff, early Showa Ultra seems to be a different niche from current super hero toku, probably due to cross-appeal to Showa Godzilla fans and any people old enough to remember dubbed broadcasts. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the reason Chaiyo and co's plans for anything involving Return through Taro haven't come to anything.
>>
>>15013981
>This is actually the first I've heard that Amazon said they were releasing the KR show globally. You have a link?
I'm not sure where the original source is, but digging around turns out that might have been a misinterpretation anyway. https://twitter.com/IgnisTL/status/737684120872968192
Although Amazons has since received an official website in English and the current speculation might be related to that, so I'm not completely sure.

>link?
There's a bunch of Crunchy-licensed Ultra shows on the usual torrent place.

>>15014002
>The point is that they've all had subs, Ultraseven and Ultra Q had only subs, there is a market for them in the West.
Q and Seven's lack of dubs is most likely more to do with Chaiyo/UM/Shout not having copies of the dubs. And the Heisei DVDs were so long ago that they're not a good indication of the home video market nowadays. The fact that they didn't lead to Funi doing later series or Image doing more movies suggests they didn't actually prove there was a market for up-to-date Ultraman on home video.
>>
Kamen Rider fag here. What's the reason why Ultraman's CGI/special effects look miiiiiiiles better than anything Toei shits out? Better tech, better budget, Toei just being the stingy bastards they are?
>>
>>15018342
One, history
Two, less episodes means more budget per episode
Three, it doesn't look that much better. Rider is just oversaturated with its SFX and CGI
>>
>>15018273

>One theater special isn't exactly enough precedent to say "they'll definitely release this particular movie".
If there was only one theater special, and nothing else, you would be right. But there are nine series, a few released each year. This is part of a trend of getting more and more giant monster movies generally, and specifically more ultra shows. Can you think of any movie, even with a limited showing like X and Ginga S are getting, that did not have some kind of wider release afterwards? Why would they go to the trouble to licence and dub these movies, to show on like 20 screens and then never been seen again? Does this make sense to you?

>Of course it seems like fewer are missing if you discount some others.
>Assuming you're not mistaken and thinking of the California broadcast back in 2010, Hawaii is a market unlike the rest of the U.S. when it comes to toku.
>It was still without subs, and actually predates the big-scale subbed streaming, so using that to claim subbed streaming is inevitable is still jumping to conclusions. The YouTube channel and Crunchyroll licenses are almost certainly dependent on different factors.
You are missing the forest for the trees. There are so many ultra releases in English recent years, more than Kamen Rider, even more than Super Sentai. What is your point? You think we aren't getting a lot of shows?

Tsuburaya has been courting the Western market for decades. They aren't going to stop now, we're going to be getting more stuff, not less.
>>
>>15018736

>I was specifically referring to those, and even if we assume they'd be working with Tsuburaya in an ideal timeline without the lawsuit stuff, early Showa Ultra seems to be a different niche from current super hero toku, probably due to cross-appeal to Showa Godzilla fans and any people old enough to remember dubbed broadcasts. Shit man, I thought Orochi was going to eat Orb Calibur
>>
Wtf is a Zero show coming out?
>>
>>15030660

Not really. It's mostly recycled footage.

I was entertained when Hou lost the source of its powers and stopped attacking and Orb briefly hesitated before straight up murdering the defenseless beast.

It's over? Oh well

Not yet I don't think.

But Orb ends next week, right?
>>
>>15033229
Episode 25 airs next Friday and then The Origin Saga starts two days after.

What's Orb's form in Origin Saga gonna be called? I like how classic Ultra he looks without the huge swatches of black, as well as how Gai transformed with the Orb Calibur.
>>
>>15035374
Origin the First. They're taking the oddly straightforward route, you see.

Not sure if it's ever been brought up before, but in the Return of Ultraman torrent (and mega upload), episode 16 is a repeat of episode 15. It's the beginning of a two-parter so I can't just skip it, but I'm surprised if no one has pointed out this mistake before.

Does the correct version of episode 16 exist?
>>
So what's the word on Origin Saga? It's here in like 6 days
>>
>>15039065
It's been pointed out before, but it's still gone unfixed for the last longest.

>>15039492
Everything posted in this thread so far. We don't know who's going to rip it yet, if anybody chooses to.

Oh god are they gonna try and fucking redeem Juggler? lame
>>
>>15042805
He's working with the villain in the movie, so it's temporary at best.
>>
>>15042729

I can't tell if that's Orb and Juggler fighting Orochi or Orb fighting Orochi while Juggler gets cheap shots in.

Juggler did mention he only warned VTL about Orochi because he would have been caught defenseless in the crossfire, but it'd still suck if they redeemed him. I could see him helping to take down Orochi then immediately turning on Orb when it was over or using the excitement to make a getaway.

Apparently Orb has an OST out. Does anyone have it? Nyaa turns up nothing and we don't exactly have a Mega like the Rider and Sentai threads.
>>
>>15044001
Is it the 1st one or do you mean the 2nd ost is finally out which contains the songs used during Orb Origin fight scenes?
>>
>>15044040

The first. There's stuff on Youtube that looks like the SZ/Burnmite/HS themes, Gai's Orbnica, and a couple of other tracks.

Kinda weird, but I don't hate it. It's like a busier, cooler UltraSeven X.

Natasha screaming for Gai in happiness while Juggler introducing her into darkness high every night.

A little low considering how badly it's crushing Sentai/KR in quality rn.

8-8.5/10. I'm surprised how much I enjoyed it. The new dynamics (e.g. no focus on defense team) and smaller main cast made things really tight and I ended up liking everyone. The Gai/Juggler thing reminds me of early Heisei Rider in the way they interacted with each other. The plots were pretty good and Orb himself is a neat Ultra.
>>
>>15049385
I like the sudden UltraMAN and Tiga flying fusion flying phase. Though I wished the Juggler/Orb tag team fight lasted longer.
7.5/10
