Never realised just how many cues Anno took from Be Invoked until I finally saw Ideon. It worked out pretty great though, Rahxephon stuck a little too close to the NGE formula to be successful but NGE knew where to take and deviate from its own inspirations.

To be honest though I wouldn't mind seeing some fresh reimaginations of Eva in animated form. Rebuild's biggest problem IMO was that it couldn't make its mind up whether it wanted to be a straight remake of NGE or something totally new. A completely new series/AU project, possibly with a different director, could breathe new life into the franchise.

Though After The End is still the greatest thing to come out of Evangelion. No question.

I think that was the strategy all along, just like the original series draws you in then turns into something different. They both achieved the same result of going from good, to very good, to a letdown. I think the 4th will continue the nosedive that began with the 3rd movie too. It MIGHT have a kickass first half, just like EoE, followed by a really weird and bad 2nd half, or maybe it'll be all weird and bad.

All in all I think their biggest problem was in the project management department. But it seems to be present and pervasive in Jp industries in general.

I never followed discussions or info drops from interviews with the staff, but ever since watching the first dvd of 1.01 I got the feeling that your post alludes to, a compromise between old and new. That only grew when the sequels arrived, they progressively left their tv series origins and went in their own direction. No one knew how the first one would turn out but even then they made a few important changes to the story that obviously meant sequels would be even more different.

That said, I'll always see 2.22 as the best example of old vs. new, it was a great experience watching it. If anything 3.0 was the most alienating one in my experience, but I'm sure it has its share of fans because of how different it was.
