I finished the series and really liked it. Are the rebuilds worth watching?

What do you want to discuss ?
I mean the problem is right in the picture you posted. It gives (with most fan produced art) the "false" impression Evangelion is a fucking mecha show when it's not.
Maybe instead of /a/ we should create a /p-ward/ for psychiatric ward in which to discuss the Eva characters.

this is the most fucking retarded meme that needs to die. the idea that Eva isn't /m/ is bulshit invented by /a/ weebs who are ashamed to like mecha as a genre because it's 'too commercial' or some nonsense.

if you actually watch Evangelion you can see that it has every fucking hallmark of the genre, from tropes to themes. Hell, the production of Evangelion and its place in anime history is impossible to understand if we arbitrarily decide it's not a mecha show. might as well call it a magical girl anime, because words mean nothing, right?

I love Evangelion and it's a mecha anime that intentionally references tropes from that genre. Just because the mecha are resurrected corpses of dead gods with the souls of mommies inside doesn't make it NOT a mecha anime.

It ain't a mecha series. One if not the basic premise of any mecha anime is that you need a fucking pilot to pilot the damn machine. No pilot, the machine does jack squat. Not so in Evangelion where the pilot in the best of circumstances is an accessory to the Eva. Take away the pilot and you still have a giant humanoid "robot/god/something/ being able to do things on its own and with its own free will.
Evangelion is fundamentally an eschatological anime that happens to have something resembling but is not a giant robot in it.

also I remind you that the Evas do, actually, need an ass in that cockpit 90% of the time. you're using weird metrics that nobody involved in the creation of that show uses. Anyone in Japan will tell you it's a fucking mecha show. It's like saying, I don't know, that by some strange metric Star Trek doesn't count as sci-fi despite being created specifically within sci-fi as a genre. Which Eva was. It was intended as a mecha anime.

Those are robots that have an AI. The Evangelions don't fit the bill. I mean seriously, the entire eva series is predicated on the fact the evas are giant humanoid aliens. Some were found in "hibernation" in the south pole and co-opted (through the use of armour and the plug-in system) created by the humans to fight against the other aliens (the angels).

It doesn't matter what it was intended as. I will agree with you that EVA uses tropes and stereotypes belonging to mecha anime genre. But that in itself is not sufficient to qualify it as a mecha anime. Otherwise citing another example we would qualify Gunbuster as a sports show.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Loonix, is in fact, EVA/Loonix, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, EVA plus Loonix. Loonix is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning OS made useful by the EVA corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by weeaboos.

Hijacking this thread for a bit. Never watched. Sub or Dub? I absolutely love listening to dubs from the 90's and early 00's because it wasn't the same 2 or 3 people voicing every character. But I want the best experience possible. Is the dub good or sub all the way?

The English dub is painful to me, especially Spike Spencer's Shinji and Tiffany Grant's Asuka, which sound like parodies of those characters.

Some of the other VAs are okay, but not many of them.
