TV series OVA are basically straight to video type things that are sold on their own (in physical and digital form) or bundled with things like box sets, manga volumes, etc.

The Unicorn TV series is just the OVA series chopped up with a very tiny amount of new footage added and then broadcasted on tv. The only reason they even did the tv series is because a different non-gundam series they had planned ended up getting cancelled but they had already purchased the timeslot and needed something to fill it with.

The OVA series for Unicorn is one of the best selling anime OVAs of all time and the model kit sales drastically exceeded expectations. Sales were not an issue.

They were originally going to broadcast some stupid kids break dancing battle anime iirc but something happened and they pulled the plug on it. Pretty sure that there is a PV for the series somewhere.

But yeah, it was likely just an excuse to pull the plug because of the low ratings. Remember what they did to SEED? After editing every gun into a laser pistol and its ratings dying they moved it from its prime spot on toonami saturday evenings to a death slot late night Fridays before adult swim had the block. Back then they just aired reruns of stuff like dexters lab and looney toons on it and it was basically a death sentence for ratings. I imagine that they were under some sort of contract to air it for a certain amount of time or episodes so they just moved it out of the way when it failed to take off.

I watched unicorn when I still didn't watch the trilogy, and it wasn't really that confusing. Sure, a few references went over my head, but I understood the plot just fine.
