***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

***Graze Group Build***
Rules:
Pick any 1/144 or 1/100 kit from the Graze family (Pic Related), and paint and customize it. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a Graze Ritter and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Start Date: 12/1/16
Due Date: 2/1/17
Submissions go to
[email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also include some WIP photos of the kits being constructed/painted/etc as validation that it's your custom.

Does anyone know much about the limited edition stands are coming with the IBO kits? I bought a few of the kits cause I just finished first season of IBO and wanted some, and also because I have no stands.

okay so me and my gunplabuddies were looking at some shitty leddit kits, and we saw a really bad one with no stickers, no panel lining, no anything. Naturally, we found it funny, and i started cracking snapfit-kun jokes. However, some of them didn't know who he was, so i tried to look some of his picture up online. I found what seems to be his tumblr, and...

The kits. They all had stickers. Is that tumblr account a fake or did snapshit miraculously improve while i was away? This can't be real.

Handpainting, spray paint or airbrush? Depends which one. YouTube is your friend.
>>14965551
For the time and up to now it holds up very well, same with the grunts from that series. Solid choice.
>>
>>14965578
Which one produces the best results while being light on the wallet?
>>
>>14965660
Depends, what are you painting

Any other cluttered kits where I can attach as much weapon to it as possible? Already got FA Unicorn and Astraea Type-F.
>>
>>14965670
Perfect Strike
>>
>>14965660
Depends on your maximum budget. Airbrush actually is the lowest cost over time, but it has a very high initial cost compared to the others.

If you're looking to spend no more than $X/lifetime, spray painting is the easiest/cost-efficient, but spray cans are tempermental. You can easily ruin a project with a single bad layer of spray paint when it's too humid, too cold, etc.

Hand painting never works out well aside from small details no bigger than square 3-5mm. Any larger and brush strokes become readily apparent.
>>
>>14965670
The Thunderbolt FAG or Psycho Zaku.
>>
>>14965284
Nigga I have over 300. The sadpanda and all the porn I never get around to is a worse backlog than my gunpla kits taking up space.
>it swells to over 500 during post-comiket season
>my penis just can't keep up, I'm not 18 anymore
>>
>>14965660
Handpainting is cheap to set up but you'll get worse results than airbrushing, results also largely depend on your skill with the brush and getting the paint consistency just right
Airbrushing is expensive to set up and requires a bit of knowledge but after that the costs will be the about the same as hand painting, and the painting itself is pretty easy
Spraypainting will give you something inbetween airbrushing and handpainting but the cost of spray cans will start to add up rather quickly. You also have less control over how you paint when using spraycans

If you're planning to paint a lot, get an airbrush, or go for handpainting if you don't have enough money and don't want to save for an airbrush
I wouldn't go for spraycans personally considering you can't mix them, so you end up having to buy a different can for each color
>>
>>14965529

it's really easy you just THE GUIDE

>>14965660

Topcoating the bare plastic gives you the best results for the least money. Most handpainters I've seen on here can't even match NOT painting.
>>
>>14965691
Just hand paint with enamel because that stuff dries in a nice even coat due to their long cure time
>>
Mixing gloss and semi gloss mr. colors.

is that a good idea? Whats the result?

And mr. Super clear semi gloss after painting then detail, and a top coat.

am i doing this right?

>>
>>14965711

I do have an airbursh, never used it though.
i wouldnt be asking if I had this stuff.

>>
>>14965551
It's great. Probably my favorite HG.
>>
>>14965713
read the guide
>>
>>14965713

well FINE

Mixing gloss and semigloss paints is not a big deal for us because post people gloss coat anyway at some point. If you buy flat paint you will regret it because it's inherently textured, so gloss coat stays pretty textured. Generally get gloss when you can.

>>14965673

>>
>>14965743

you better let that shit fully cure but yes you can

how defined is the area? I had a flake lift off when removing masking one time, and I masked AROUND the chip and basically "filled the pool" and everything was the same height
>>
Guys I have a question, I'm looking into start painting my kits, for now I want to try hand brushing, I'm gona use Tamiya acrylics is what we have for the most part in my country, my question is, Is the Tamiya lacquer thinner safe to use indoors? I have read that the regular one isn't so great
>>
>>14965736
don't be bully.
>>
>>14965775
If you have proper ventilation, you'll be fine. If not prop up a fan by a window so you get fresh air coming into the room/sucking out the fumigated air.
>>
>>14965787
So you wouldn't recomend it if i wanted to paint in a cold night?
If i wanted to do that the regular one would be okey?
>>
>>14965787
Different anon. What does "proper ventilation" even mean in terms of modeling? Aside from having a spraybooth when painting and wearing a respirator. It comes up when people bring up safety but I can't get a good grip on the details.
>>
>>14964936
It's most likely the Alex, granted it'll be called something else as it's not experimental anymore. Gm custom and gm cannon 2 rely heavily off its frame as it was. Then add the experimental 360 cockpit way before it was normalized in suits.

It was tuned for new types specifically Amuro. The war ended, it was heavily damaged and put in storage. Some manga already show Titans found and repair it. So either they keep that idea, upgrade to full armor, something happens and further upgraded to what it is now.

Don't underestimate it either just because it's overhauled tech from yeeeeears before. Pale rider was upgraded and took on a repaired queen mansa and char counter attack era units. Probably gonna destroy it, tie up loose ends.
>>
>>14965678
I would argue that handpainting is cheaper than spray painting, but the learning curve is much higher. Also, it's not impossible to get good results handpainting, it's not even hard to get acceptable results, but it does take a lot more time and patients
>>
>>14965775

what country
>>
>>14965834

if someone is young enough to be into gunpla and so poor they can only afford to handbrush they should be working instead
>>
>>14965775
Laquer thinner will make handpainting a pain in the ass. It will dry extremely quickly, which means more obvious brush strokes. If you're going to use tamiya acrylics for handbrushing, try thinning with their acrylic thinner, or even just with water

>>
>>14965847
I suppose so, but that's a different argument

>>14965869

>paint called vallejo isn't even sold in Spain

>>
>>14965869

>>14965870
Nah we have it's just that I read that because it comes thinned it wasn't as good for handpainting

Thanks for the answers anons, and sorry for any misspelling

I'm considering breaking down and buying a Unicorn kit, but I'm not really sure where to start. I despise the Full Armor mode and would like to avoid it, but the thing looks so plain without the extra weapons. Which kit is gonna give me the most bang for my buck while still looking good? The PG is well outside of my price range.
>>
>>14965924

Not really, they are very easy to mix and you can just make any colors you would need. They also have a large variety of premade colors. Because they are acrylics with no solvents you can mix them and store them in little plastic bottles even.

Dont listen to this anon about hand painting. It can look just as smooth as airbrushing, it takes a great deal more effort and time. There are, however, airbrush techniques that you just cant realistically replicate by hand painting.
>>
>>14965955
This was something that was questioned a lot when the kit first came out. It turns out that there are slight differences, such as in the waist, that prevent you from doing so. With modification however, it is possible.

I have the MG and really did not enjoy putting it together, it's a boring build because of its age and has very little range of motion. And I don't think I'm ever going to want to put power cable rings together again, I guess it must be an acquired taste/skill for Zakufriends.

Anyone got that G-Line resin kit? I just discovered this MS via GGen Genesis and I fell in love with it - only to sadly find out there are no Bandai kits of it.

I never got a resin before, I assume it's harder than a regular kit?

How hard do you think it would be to custom build one?

I'm only testing out what looks good on it currently so all I've really done is trim the pegs on the shoulder piece thing so it doesn't block the way when I jam the razor shoulder armor on there. Friction is doing an okay job at keeping it on for now.

Once I start doing more serious work on the kit, I'll trim the pieces so that it can slide down more and have a better fit, and then cement the shoulder armor on that one piece or something. It doesn't seem too hard to do, so you shouldn't have any trouble either.

1) Buy the expensive brushes
2) Use acrylic paints, they are safer for the plastic and cheaper to use
3) THIN YOUR PAINTS.
4) Make sure to remove excess paint from your brush tip
5) Apply thin, and I mean THIN, layers and let each layer dry for at least 12 hours
6) Keep your coats as even as you can
7) Don't plaint very light colours of dark colours. You will wind up having to put too many layers to mask the dark under coat. The paint will be visibly thick at best and full of little textures at worst.
8) If you have to paint a very light colour over a dark colour, like white over black, just dry brush on a single layer of barely thinned paint. If you do it right it wont look any different than the rest of the paint. The same come be done with any small highlight regardless of colour
9)If you are doing a reverse wash, use an enamel coat for the highlight layer, and an acrylic coat for background layer. The enamel is tougher and wont have any chance of coming off from the solvents used for removing the acrylic, it also mikes the highlights shiny which gives them a nice pop.
10) If you do fuck up and leave textures, finger prints, or brush marks on your paint, you can always gently buff them out with a piece of 2000 grit sand paper, before applying and gloss coating

You think so? That option is gone for me now since I completely destroyed the lower half of the inner leg frame to make the legs fit.

>>14968448
Yeah, it wasn't easy. Well maybe it is, and it just seemed hard for me since this is my first time doing anything like this.
What I did was cut out all the pegs and other things inside the Razor legs to make it hollow enough to have the inner frame fit in. It still didn't fit though, so I cut the frame too and now it looks like this.

Someone else could probably think of a much better and cleaner way of doing this, but this is my first time doing any modding/kit bashing so it's kinda messy.

I just spent three fucking hours de-nubbing and assembling a kit.

THREE FUCKING HOURS OF MY LIFE GONE. I haven't even lined and coated it yet and that's next on the agenda.

I used to be a snapshitter and I liked it, or at least was okay with it. I was always disappointed with how my gunpla looked, but I could at least play with them.

Now I know what I'm doing because you taught me and gave me resources I never had ten years ago for gunpla. Now I can't STOP doing what I know is what I'm supposed to do.

I used to snapshit a kit together and have it ready to have mock battles in an hour and a half.

Release me from this hell you've brought me to, /gunpla/.
>>
>>14968549
I like it, I just can't get over how silly it is to write "CUSTOM" in katakana it is on the chest. It's like a guy wanting to tell everybody else that he's totally an Ace pilot and he's totally got a lot of kills that were really confirmed and he's a famous guy so you don't gotta check on it.
>>
>>14969037
Heh, you haven't even gotten to seam welding, puttying, priming, seam welding and puttying again because the putty didn't correct it all, painting, waiting between coats and then for a day to days depending on weather, coating so you can detail it, and then coating again for it to be "done".

It gets better anon, it gets much better

But for real, try painting a kit if you haven't, it may be intimidating but the results and process are pretty neat and very fulfilling.
>>
>>14969044
oh god I didn't even mention a lot of that time assembling was cementing

I still have to sand off those fucking cement weld overflows

>>
>>14969047
Don't worry anon. It's a hobby, not a job. There's time when you have time, don't force yourself when you don't feel like building. The best tool is morale.
>>
Could I melt down some runners in acetone to make a sort of cement?
When using ABS in 3D printing it's a common trick to put printing residues in a flask with acetone and melt it down to make something that works like a cement but I don't know if it works for other plastics like PS
>>
>>14969037
>finally get a good looking paintjob after lots of effort
>go to pose the model
>all the paint near the joints or anywhere that there's movement comes right off
Oh, ok, cool.

>using a hobby knife to custom cut masking tape on a part
>knife slips and and scrapes off a noticeable amount of paint
>you had already masked and painting two nearby sections

>get jumped on by a bug while airbrushing
>drop a part with wet paint on it onto carpet

>finding fingerprints in your painted part

>go to remove some fluid from around a decal so it will dry more evenly
>the decal gets sucked up and attaches to the napkin
This ones's not so bad, pretty easy to fix. But every time it happens I feel like I'm being punished.

Gunpla can be tough. But it's one of those hobbies where when you do it right and it looks good, you look like a goddamn magician. And there's such a surreal satisfaction to applying the final topcoat to a model that has all of its panel lining and decaling done.

Melting chopped up runners from model kits in a jar of plastic cement (which contains acetone, as that's relevant to your search) is a way to make a specifically colored putty-like mixture from what I've read. I.E melt blue runners, get blue putty, stuck into the blue model piece and sand for same-color indistinguishable seam without the use of paint.

Yeah, it's a somewhat common trick. You can melt HIPS in plastic cement, which is probably some cocktail of acetone and other junk (including HIPS resin melted in there).

I just finished building the Zeta Plus A1 as my first older MG and how the Hell do I connect this thing to an action base? Only the fork thingie fits and that doesn't hold it in place at all. Is there no other way?

You have to balance it on the forks. Just tilt up the forks until it is holding it in place like a booster seat.

HG-1144-Gyancelot-Cover.jpg

So I have begun building the HG Gyancelot. This kit is the first I plan on dedicating actual work to.

I've bought some recommended supplies for removing seam lines and some tamiya primer/paints so I can hopefully have a very nice looking kit once this is done. I plan on following the tutorials laid about by the youtube posted.

https://youtu.be/6H_M2sNFlZA

I am going to fully assemble the kit first so I can easily group parts for painting without losing track too hard.

The painting itself will be by hand rather than airbrush. Any tips out there? I'm anticipating a lot of experimentation with paint mixing since I could only get flat purple tamiya paint and I'd have liked to add a metallic sheen to it so I was considering mixing the purple with some metallic silver.

Yes, you will want Dymo tape which guides the scriber very well. It is essentially a tough but removable plastic lining that sticks onto the part, so you cut against it and your scriber won't move.

Its supposed to be based off of Saber from Fate/Stay Night. Her hair is blonde so I wanted to do some sort of yellowy/blonde on atleast one part of the head.
>>
>>14971097
Ah, okay. Probably just a paler yellow than that, and a command horn or the Nobel's bangs.
>>
>>14971097
i'd recommend maybe only the top part to be yellow, and maybe change it to a lighter yellow. maybe use the shwalbe or the ritter version so you can "replicate" the side skirts on saber. maybe add more gold trimmings on the legs too
>>
>>14971111
You think I'd be able to somehow incorporate Nobels bangs onto a grazes head? Or I wonder if just swapping out the whole head would work.

Why do something like this? It's not like it's actually going to resemble Saber aside from the most basic of thing, a color scheme. If you want Saber get a Saber figure, or hell, customize Super Fumina.
>>
>>14971126
Should be able to glue them on, but I think the Nobel's head mounts on a larger balljoint than the Graze has.
>>

>>
>>14971058
use gold instead of yellow
>>
>>14971138
Yeah I know that its not actually going to resemble Saber. I'm just taking the color scheme.

>>14971145
Why would I want to try and make Saber from a gunpla? Its only supposed to be loosely based off of her design.
>>
>>14971145

The Graze actually seems like a decent fit, since it has the armored high heels and its shoulders sort of resemble the puffy sleeves.
>>
>>14971159
The Graze Ritter would probably be better. Then you could just paint the headcrest itself gold and have it look alright with the colorscheme rather than painting the entire head, which makes it just look off compared to the rest of it.

the benefit of having 2 costs is so none of the paint on the model gets rubbed/scratched off after the first coat. if you havent panel lined, then you wouldnt need it if you're satisfied with it. coat it after panel lining just to be safe and sure

I can guarantee you I am not Snapfit. We're working on making the board better so we don't end up with the last groupbuild for every single group build.

See, a lot of people like to parrot "read the guide" but I think a few people actually follow what it says, that's just by judging the last groupbuild. I like to assume that some of these entries were built by newbies who have no idea what they're doing, and are probably confused as shit by the guide. I try to give advice if I can, I've been building model kits for over 20 years, and I've made about every mistake in the book.

A lot of people like to keep /m/ as their little hugbox, a place where they feel in charge. We trips don't care about anonymity because we can respond when called out on something. These people are afraid, because we basically do whatever we want by upsetting the status quo set up by these individuals.

The real shitposters are the dum-dums who spam every general with image dumps and then blame us with the excuse that we take off our trips when we have no real reason to.

If you're such a great modeler, then why didn't you enter the groupbuild yourself? Even if stuff like that badly painted Hi-Mock or Knight Graze gets submitted, that's still more credit to them for actually trying to customize a kit than someone with a holier-than-thou attitude with a mission to "save" the board who doesn't even enter a kit of his own.

Also it's proven fact that you guys remove your trip, or at least Snapshit does.
