I don't know what it is, but i really like it.
I love the belts, suit design, the playing card gimmick, and the monster design.
I agree the story was an absolute mess for like the first 35 episodes, but once it got its shit together I really liked it. I think the Battle Fight was a cool concept.
I loved how Kenzaki couldn't fight for shit at the start of the show but got better and better as it went on.
While the characters did act like nincompoops I feel like all of their motivations are very clear, and i enjoyed that.
Kenzaki wanted to work together and protect people.
Tachibana wanted to stop the undead no-matter the cost
Chalice just wanted to live a normal life
Mutsuki was a fucking faggot
They all had their cool moments and all were unique.
I thought the side characters were nice (except that terrible little girl), even though they were almost completely useless.

Fangire are presumably living (well, probably not /living/ but biological/mystical, not technological/ethereal) creatures and so are oni. My point is that Kiva/Kivala and the Hibiki riders are biological changes, and while it's not Wataru/Natsumi/Hitoshi et al's flesh, but it's still flesh. Also, Kiva's "King's Armour" could very well refer to the parts of Kiva that are actually, you know, armoured. His shoulders, sides and back, arms, legs, head etc... The exposed chest is very likely fanservice for housewives and reference to the homme fatales of typical gothic romance, whose billowing open shirts are almost as common as the ripped bodices of their heroines. Kivala's obvious breasts with their metal bra cups are even more reason to believe they're monstrous fangire-hybrid flesh rather than armour.
