I can't remember if they mention it in the episode or if I knew beforehand, but the thought that Zeon were already fielding these huge machines, who just tore that colony's shit up, while the feddies hadn't even had anything comparable up to that point really made them feel like a huge, overpowering threat.

Pretty much anytime someone with a name and backstory steps into a mobile suit it become a threatening machine. If a nameless mook is in it, it is just cannon fodder. Character Plot armor is the most powerful trait in Gundam.
