Both the design and colour scheme don't fit. Even then, I'd believe you if you said the MS looks fine in motion, but the equipment is even more out of place - 0079 just uses upscaled human stuff, while the Atlas has weird sci-fi shit.

It's more futuristic than the original dawn-of-the-1980's vision, thus it doesn't fit inside that vision. That's about it. Course they say the same about the GP Gundams too. And they have similar curves in some places, too.

Thunderbolt is considered full AU from the end of A Baoa Qu on.

Feddies get their hands on mass produced Zeongs, Zeon newtype units and research, etc. Then they produce the Atlas type Gundam and equipment instead of going down the path towards Zeta.

Thunderbolt is in a full blow secession war between the Federation and South East Asia while the Zeon Remnants are stuck in hiding trying to get back the reuse system from the Buddhist Newtype guy.

It's definitely different, and the justification for it's weird design is that it's essentially a souped up hybrid of Zeon and Federation tech, particularly the aquatic mobile suits.

There's nothing particularly "futuristic" about it in comparison to other Fed tech, it's just a different frame and method of contruction.

The way I see it, Atlus Gundam is essentially the Federation looking at their current lineup of ground-type MS, and realizing that none of it is particularly good at fighting underwater, which is where a lot of the Zeon Remnants were hiding, so they decided they needed an equalizer that could give them the edge they needed to mop them up.

Sleds and shields are two different things for a reason. One is meant for stability and speed while moving over snow and the other is built to be a hand-carryable defense. The fact that it's a combo makes it even worse. It's a half-assed solution to something that shouldn't be a problem for something the size and maneuverability of an MS much less a Gundam.

The design fits what it is. It's a technology testbed pulled out of the lab at the request of a Federation bigwig. It's an awkward halfway point between OYW-era monocoque frames and Gryps-era movable frames. It's a postwar design for testing new technologies, not something intended to be mass produced for battlefield use.

To use an air warfare analogy it's more like an X designated plane than an F designated plane.

Remember, in late UC starting at around Gundam F91 mobile suits start getting miniaturized and more focus is put on the suits being able to dodge or block attacks rather than just minimize the damage incurred from them. After all since beam weapons were introduced, armor in general has gotten more and more obsolete.

With advances in I-Field miniaturization, mobile suit maneuverability and beam shields, and conversely advances in beam weapons since the OYW that allow more suits to use them to more devastating effect (see the VSBRs on the F91) you basically don't need armor anymore, and in fact it kind of becomes a waste of money.
