If /m/'s general opinion is anything to go by, the tone shift in ZZ is either a breath of fresh air or a slap to the face.
If you liked zeta, you'll probably like at least the second half of ZZ.

ZZ is fine. It's somewhat different and has a markedly more lighthearted, wacky tone to start, but even that is interspersed with some dark moments. It gets marginally more serious as it goes along, but it never entirely loses its comedic underpinnings. There's people who'll say 'just watch the last 7 where they get back to space, they're normal' but there's a mini-arc smack in the middle with a chinese guy with a harem and Judau in drag.

Basically, if you don't have a complete stick up your ass, and take this series with a grain of salt, I think you'll find it easier to get through.

Keep in mind that when people say it's "bad" they're talking about the direction that Tomino decided to take the characters. In terms of quality of animation, production and plot, it's just as good as Zeta, if not better in many instances. And depending on what you thought of the characters in Zeta, you may even like ZZ more because there are no characters on the same tier as Katz or Reccoa or first-half Kamille.

Basically, whether you'll enjoy ZZ or not depends entirely on personal taste. It isn't "bad" because of shitty animation, or bad planning, or TV execs fucking with Tomino to force changes to the plot, or anything like that. It just takes a different tone compared to Zeta.

If you are from MAL you won't like it

Don't look at it as Zeta part II. Zeta was Kamille's story, ZZ is Judau's. As such the show has it's own tone. Keep that in mind and you'll enjoy it as it goes from a Saturday morning cartoon to a proper Gundam show as the show progresses.

To be honest I didnt enjoy zeta as much as other people do, I fucking hated everybody except Amuro and Char and I enjoyed myself inmensely every time somebody died.

ZZ started strong for me as it didnt take itself so seriously, the comedy in the first half of the show drags on and gets annoying at times (fuck all the hostage back and fort with Chara), but the vastly more likeable cast makes up for it, and some of the more shit characters like Beecha and Mondo change for the better (still you have to be retarded to keep them on the ship holy fuck).

Its still has glaring flaws, like some deaths being handled really poorly, or the change in tone not merging very well in some episodes of the second half, but overall it was worth the watch if you ask me

People that say "skip ZZ" are fucking idiots because that's like saying read a book and skip half of it. Zeta and ZZ are chapters 1 and 2 of a single story. That's why the ending in Zeta is half baked. It's not a real ending, just a cliffhanger for the second part of the story. While it's true there is a notable shift in tone in ZZ in first couple of episodes compared to the Zeta by episode 10 we're squarely back into 0079 Gundam territory.
People that criticise ZZ while praising tv 0079 are hypocrits. The tone and silliness in both series is exactly the same. So if you liked tv 0079 you'll like ZZ (designs, characters, humour, tragedy, all of it.). Just fucking ignore the "muh Gundam is not tragic enough crybabies".
