The Ideon was possibly a monumental relic and technically theirs so they had every reason to want it back.

Also they hated how far below humans were from them, so every loss just made them angrier.

Misunderstanding is the name of the game in Ideon (not just at the start, in every fucking episode. You would have to be blind to not see it). And it ends up in absolute tragedy for everyone involved. Ideon is a better Gundam than Gundam. Tomino never managed to outdo himself although he came fucking close with Turn A.

You could say that about a lot of mecha anime made in the 80s and 90s. A lot of them seemed hell-bent on streching things out as much as possible even though a removed cour or two would've made them flow a lot better.

Much as it is a bit of a slog to get through, I think the length benefits the show by really hammering home how relentlessly shit everything is. I'd be worried that you'd lose that if you cut out a third.

Yeah that is the curse of doing TV anime instead of OVAs or movies I suppose. These days directors often have the opposite problem that they try to cram what would be better as 35-40ish episodes into 26 episodes.

In most 80s shows the mecha porn makes up for when the plot gets slow. I found this to be a bit less so with Ideon than other 80s mecha anime, just because while I like the Buff clan designs, the fights seemed to have less variety and less interesting setups to me than what became standard a few years later. Only having the Ideon for mecha on the protagonists side was part of it.

As a mecha the Ideon was great thought, I loved watching them discover some new trick it could pull off. It was a ferocious machine, and some of the particular fights are some of the most memorable in the genre, mainly when Ideon really showed off its power level.

It's a toy. Toys are designed to be played with and eventually broken. They ain't multi-hundred $ statues.

Ideon was the only kill em all story from Tomino that worked, in some way...

Dunbine's was pointless.
Zambot 3's was pointess.
