See I would argue the exact opposite, Rain never really understood Domon and rarely ever tried. Like the guy was worried and angry about Allenby due to losing literally EVERY MEMBER OF HIS FAMILY two of them just yesterday, so yeah the guy is angry he might lose someone else. Rain however just had a pity party for herself because granted that is because in order for Domon's character to develop he needs to let go of his rage and go out of his comfort zone to understand people without his fists.

She is kind of a petty bitch who bitches Domon out for stuff she does. this was the only Gundam series i actually followed. Domon was a kick-ass Gundam fighter, i kid you not, i rooted for him all through the series, the Shining Gundam had a sweet signature move (Shining Finger), even the Burning Gundam, which replaced the Shining Gundam following the battle in the Guinena Highlands (I apologize if I misspelled it) that left it too badly damaged to use anymore, had an equally sweet signature move (Burning Finger), the other Gundams in the Shuffle Alliance were awesome too, i actually liked the Gundam Maxter and the Gundam Rose, even if Chibodee Crockett was a bit annoying and George de Sand tried to pretend Marie-Louise didn't exist to the point where she convinced Domon to pretend to kidnap her so that she could get his attention

I enjoyed the dub of G, but is has several problems. Master Asia is the only character that sounds completely natural through the whole show. Mark is excellent when he's yelling, but a lot of Domon's speaking lines come of as stilted and weird.

It's a really common trope in Japanese stuff, there's a guy and a feminine girl, things aren't advancing between them, and since you can't make a whole series about things not advancing they introduce a tomboy that adds romantic and sexual tension for the guy and gives him courage, and at the end of the series he has the courage so he ditches the tomboy goes for the feminine girl. It's not as blatant when you see it once but after seeing this situation in several works in which the same things always happen and the tomboy never wins despite being clearly the best girl I can say it's a sad pattern, see the romantic comedy Kimagure Orange Road, most stories by manga author Masakazu Katsura, etc.F or an occidental example it's exactly like Archie-Veronica-Betty, actually.

When it aired in japan it probably caught a good amount of shit for being the first Non-UC show combined with not following the usual formula (Gundam Fight instead of an all out war and all). the heat probably let up as time went on and people really did start liking it more.

When it aired in America it was pretty much well liked from the get go. It took the "Giant robots slapping shit" bit of Gundam that everyone liked, combined it with martial arts and crazy techniques for the folks that liked other shows airing on toonami like DBZ and YYH, and removed a lot of the political and military aspects that a lot of fans didn't really care for, in favor of more character focused arcs that were easier and more interesting to follow.

Half the plot of G Gundam is about the fact that Domon starts out as kind of a shitty person and needs to be drawn out of his comfort zone so he can learn to communicate with more than just his fists. Otherwise he'll end up like Chapman, who fought and fought until he was a wreck of his former self, or like Master Asia, who tried to change the world through violence because that was the only method of communication that he was good at.

The Burger King ball at the end only finishes the Devil Gundam off. What actually beat it was Domon managing to express himself without having to use his fists. That's why Rain is important: she's someone who doesn't understand the type of communication that Domon's too used to using, which forces him to grow.

Master Asia is a martial arts master and not a Pygmalion.

In all honesty, Domon would have been nicer from the jump if he had become the Gundam Fighter for Neo Japan without the Devil Gundam incident happening.

I'm saying this because people seem to think that training with Master Asia just made him into an asshole in general and not the fact that the moment he came back home, his mom dies, dad gets put in suspended animation, and his brother is a labeled a criminal with a gundam. That would sour anyone's mood.

Nobody thinks the training with Master Asia is what made Domon an asshole. It just did nothing to teach Domon any social skills when talking to anybody who wasn't a fellow martial artist.

By the time Domon gets out of Guyana he's overcome his anger issues and is largely a much better person. However, he still doesn't know how to communicate with people in ways other than fighting them, and the second half of the show is about him having to overcome that flaw too if he's going to really surpass his master.

As far as I'm aware, the bad reviews and negative reception come from the main, Japanese fan base, and almost entirely from when the series was still new, It was very shockingly different than anything UC, so a lot of the negativity is just reactionary, over time the general opinion on G has changed to the point that it's much more accepted and has ended up as a fairly popular meme. In the West, we generally love it, especially those of us who were fell in love with Anime thanks to Cartoon Network's Toonami block and it's airing of Dragonball Z and Gundam Wing (there were a few other gems in there like Ronin Warriors, but those are the two that people remember). A lot of us had earlier exposure in the form of some classics like Speed Racer, but it wasn't really differentiated from our homegrown animation as far as I recall. Anyway, at the time G Gundam aired in the West, Dragonball Z was at the height of its popularity here. G being essentially DBZ with giant robots and shorter power up scenes meant that we all mostly have fond memories of it.

G Gundam is a very special little creature in the Gundam franchise, as it is very different from the rest of the series, while still being put together and structured in quite a similar fashion. It will please some while anger others, as it's not your ordinary Gundam show, yet that might also be a good thing. Personally I thought that it was decent, not good, not bad, just somewhere in the middle.
