Not even Char's Zaku II or even the High mobility types outperform a vanilla RGM-79. The only thing Zakus had over GMs were their pilot tenure and the fact that a number of them were veterans, and even then, that didn't count for much in the end.

Then there's the fact that specialized variants were incredibly simple fast, and cheap to develop.

The GM exists to be "the good guy" army machine. In the meta sense, it's a suit that primarily exists to provide the good guy faction with a Mobile Suit to use that isn't the protagonists' and which can be used to fill in scenes and make battles look intense.

That being said, canonically, the thing kicked ass. As mentioned by others it outperformed the most prevalent Zeon MS, the Zaku, in literally every department. The Dom, too, was outperformed in every way but speed, and even in this department it could be matched and defeated by GM Light Armor types. Only the Gelgoog was the mass-production Mobile Suit to outperform the GM and Gundam itself, but it was literally piloted by children.

The GM won the Federation the war- it was overall better, more numerous, standardized, but still had variants out the ass, and could even give newbie pilots a crutch using Amuro Ray's piloting data, letting all those fresh pilots survive long enough to become more seasoned against Zeon's longstanding veteran pilots. In well-on every way it beat out what Zeon had at the time.

However, the GM is not meant to look badass, because if it did, why focus on the Gundam? Canonically the GM was a capable suit that did the job so well that it would effectively be -the- Mobile Suit of the Federation for decades- GM II, GM III, Jegan, the list goes on.

But it is not a hero suit. It's a jobber. It's not meant to look impressive, because if it did it'd go against its narrative purpose- to make the bad guys look tough. Someone else put it far better than me:

"that's the problem with the Federation forces, you never see them unless they're in trouble".

If we don't count the kill on Matilda's Medea, Doms get zero kills in-series, whereas a Ball actually gets a kill without being destroyed in turn, and everything jobs to the Gundam.

And the Guncannon is one step below the Gundam itself, it blew everything but a Gelgoog out of the water. Which is also why it was expensive as fuck and the only ones they actually produced once they got GMs were exclusively for aces.

Sure it doesn't have close combat weapons, sucks at manoeuvrability, speed isn't great and armor is probably a step below the gundam, still. In terms of firepower, the Guncannon might actually be stronger even though it can't shoot as long as the gundam. Its laser rifle is powerful enough to shoot even a Dom and the shoulder cannon are no small fries either. The Guncannon is vastly more powerful than a Zaku, armor is better and it's probably equal in speed and mobility.

Not by much. When Amuro was piloting it, it was fully capable of tearing Zakus apart barehanded. It just lacks a melee weapon.

Isn't the Dom's bulk only mostly from its hover capabilities? I heard once it's nor really particularly heavily armored compared to other zeek MS.

Protection wise I'm pretty sure it's a little better than Zakus and Goufs as the chest is thicker, especially in later models.

That said, its defense mainly comes down to manueverability.

Some people think the Dom is just bulky because the base mass figures (no fuel and ammunition loaded so basically the frame and armor and machinery) aren't that much heavier than a Zaku. In fact, some Dom variants end up being pretty lightweight and are lighter than Zakus. Also some places mention the Rick Dom as having more open interior space for holding fuel.

Origin's early Guncannons and the MP Guncannons from 0080 are probably also inferior to the Guncannons on White Base. They definitely have weaker armor to begin with, so they drop like flies when they get hit, while Kai was soaking up enemy fire in his Guncannon when they were attacked by Garma's forces and not being in too much trouble.

In the MSG novels, Denim thinks the Guncannon unit destined for White Base looks crude and primitive at first, but does note that it has a lot of deadly firepower.

Think about it. Zeon's been using Mobile Suits before the OYW. These people in GMs have less than weeks of training, and they're being deployed en masse. There's going to be a steep learning curve, and that steep curve is going to be fatal.

But like the Russians against the Luftwaffe, eventually it doesn't matter how hard Zeon fights. They're going to be outnumbered, and they're going to die horribly. Don't forgot that there are even multiple Gundam-types running around in the OYW, and that's a fucking nightmare for Zeon forces to deal with.

The GM is absolutely perfect, because it reflects the Federation's philosophy. You have the Gundam, which is an amazing suit: Step it down, and you have the GM. The Gundam has two beam sabers? The GM has one, enough to fuck shit up.

The Gundam has a beam rifle? The GM has a beam spray gun, which is almost as good. Then you have ten of these fuckers for every Zaku, and the beam gun is so deadly - as is the beam saber - you're going to kill 'em anyway.
