I wanna get into Nanoha. Season 1 or Movie 1st?
>>
Season 1 is similar to Cardcaptor Sakura so if you like that and Shinbo's directing go for it. The movie cuts a lot but adds more backstory about Precia and the bit Nanoha vs Fate fight is great. I think if you like the franchise you should eventually watch both since they're different enough.
>>
If you really want to get into it, watch it in release order:
Nanoha - A's - StrikerS - Movie 1 - Movie 2

The show is better for getting a hold of the universe, and watching the movies first will spoil you with their animation budget. Hard mode: you start with Triangle Heart in order to get the backstory for the whole Takamachi family.

ViVid becomes a shonen anime with the occasional cool scene and increasingly stupid characters and justification for the fighting. They also try and pretend Nanoha and Fate aren't gay.
>>
S1 and S2 then their respective movies.

>They also try and pretend Nanoha and Fate aren't gay.
What, do they introduce male love interests?
>>
Probably the series. Though honestly, you don't lose much if you watch the first movie instead of S1, because the first half is old school monster of the week. They clearly hadn't figured out what they wanted to do yet. Though of course, watching the movie first runs the problem of getting used to movie budget animation, which the regular series do not have.

No, more just lines like "This is Fate. She is Nanoha-mama's BEST FRIEND" and Vivio pretends she doesn't have two moms.

There were two mangas going at the same time: ViVid, and Force.

ViVid took the moeshit even further and sent the adopted loli to fighting school for several arcs worth of tournaments, while the author let his apparent hatred for NanoFate take over.

Force went in the complete opposite direction and gave us cool shit like this fucking thing. Unfortunately, it also introduced a new male character to steal half of the spotlight with his dark and tortured backstory, and the writer seemed to think stabbing characters at complete random equals plot development and tension.

Force is on indefinite hiatus and it doesn't look like it's ever going to come out, while we are stuck with 2 seasons of ViVid doing the same shit with occasional child abuse to tide us over until Movie 3rd eventually comes out.

I really hate how this series adds like 20 new characters with every installment instead of fleshing out established ones. I'm also not opposed to giving a male character a prominent role, but why bother adding one when there are already several who basically got introduced and then shoved into the background? Look at someone like Chrono, who might as well not exist anymore.
>>
>>14953561
The problem with Force isn't that it added new characters though. You can have a totally new story with new characters in the same setting, with old ones staying on the sidelines.

The problem is that they tried to show how big a deal the new characters are by completely overshadowing the old cast, especially the new villains who are pssh nothin personnel edgelords who utilize bullshit powers to curbstomp established powerhouse characters left and right, and then suddenly have a ~sympathetic backstory~ and you're supposed to feel bad for them even though they indiscriminately kill a lot of people.

What I am saying is, if someone liked Symphogear GX, Force should be right up their alley.

>>14953515
Not knowing anything about this series, the picture looks like a Gundam (probably Nu) fucked Saber.
>>
>>14953629
Pretty much, the Devices are all sheer fucking mechanical porn and it's chock full of /m/ references(like how Signum is basically just Lamia Loveless). It's not DEEP like everyone around here likes to pretend they enjoy to shitpost, but if you want to see stuff blow up, it's damn good.

A's was great, StrikerS, while it has it's issues, it also gets enough time to give everyone some development. ViVid is where the character-roulette happens, and all the established characters are reduced to cameos at best, mentions at worst.

I made an entire Windows Soundset of Bardiche talking to me.

Cartridges were the best thing to happen to mahou shoujo.

I've seen all of the franchise up to Strikers and liked every entry. I also seem to be in the minority of fans in that I actually liked seeing Nanoha, Fate, and the rest of the cast after they've grown up and become important people in positions of responsibility.

I can only hope that Nanoha's story actually gets a real animated continuation someday and that we get to see the Ace of Aces go MAXIMUM POWER during a Lost Logia case again.

>>14953863
Reflections just got a new teaser, so it's confirmed to still be happening.
>>
>>14953924
What is Reflections? Is it another movie?
>>
>>14953968
It was originally titled Movie 3rd, apparently they changed the name.
>>
>>14953582
>they tried to show how big a deal the new characters are by completely overshadowing the old cast, especially the new villains who are pssh nothin personnel edgelords who utilize bullshit powers to curbstomp established powerhouse characters left and right, and then suddenly have a ~sympathetic backstory~ and you're supposed to feel bad for them even though they indiscriminately kill a lot of people.
To be perfectly fair, this is pretty much what they did with the Wolkenritter in A's. They did completely outmatch and curbstomp the old cast, they did have bullshit new powers, it wasn't anything personal for them, they did have a sympathetic backstory, and the had indiscriminately killed a lot of people.

The difference being that the Wolenritter are endearing and likeable, whereas the Huckebiin are extremely grating smug jackasses.
>>
>>14954234
I was fine with Nanoha and Fate getting their shit stomped, as it makes sense that they are still too "green" to have anything as advanced as the cartridge system. Plus, once Chrono gets Durandal, he can stand up to them just as well without any modifications.

The Force guys are just extra shit.
>>
>>14954246
To be honest was perfectly okay with the established cast getting beaten in the first act by something new and unfamiliar, it's kind of the precedent in Nanoha. Fate chumps Nanoha, the Wolkenritter make short work of both of them, Jail and the numbers get the better of the forwards (and later all of Riot Force 6), you get the idea.

Anddidn' the returning cast in Force eventually get some kind of anti eclipse weapons or something?

No, new villains getting the better of the main cast was not the problem with Force. People got *so* salty when Signum got beat and they acted like her being badly wounded would mean she'd never see combat again, and I was sitting there thinking "But this always happens in Nanoha, she'll be back on her feet before long", and that was exactly what happened.

Again, it's all in execution. We were supposed to like the Wolkenritter, and we did, because in spite of their actions they were honourable, good natured, well intentioned, acting in desperation out of love and going out of their way to avoid permanent damage out of respect for their master.

The Huckebien, by contrast, are not remotely likeable because they embrace being utter smarmy dickheads at all times, without any apparent redeeming features beyond love for each other, which even friggin Jail and the numbers had, and they still managed to be more likeable.

production order

>>14953486
I'm with this. You have to endure 3.5 episodes (well, let's say 2.5 because you obviously do want to see introduction to it all, don't you), but it is worth it.
Watching it in the original sequence and then having the movies gives better and more authentic experience.
>>
>>14953663
The devices are top tier bros as well.

>Willingly take on dangerous upgrades that can destroy them if it meant that their masters can have a fighting chance against the enemy
>Will cheer up their masters when they are feeling down, even when the devices themselves are wrecked and it takes everything just to move themselves
>Will keep on fighting so long as their master wish to, even if they are completely totaled
>>
>>14953515
Vivid Strike is basically Force 2.0 without the insane mechanical design.

It's seriously making me feel intense doubt for Reflection.

I just want this franchise to be good again but every new entry past StrikerS makes me feel like A's perfection was a fluke.

>>14953437
don't, it's pedotrash

Release order.
>>
>>14955128
Remember that we got both movies after StrikerS, so it's not like it's been all downhill. Just the last two seasons.
>>
>>14955411
Does it really count when they were just remakes of the first two seasons?
>>
>>14956259
They had a decent amount of new content, and all the reworked content was done well. If they were capable of doing that, then I think they can make another good movie, especially without being tied to fucking Vivio again.
>>
>you will never see Voltaire again

Why do all the good parts of StrikerS have to be left behind?
>>
>>14955139
>Nachladen!
>Explosion!
The belkan cartridge stuff were better, in As (the series naturally, the movie has good animation but sucky screenplay).
>>
>>14956364
Cutting Graham makes sense since the movies are supposed to be films in-universe.

Pacing issues are just due to compressing a 13-episode series with very little filler into a 150 minute film and deciding to toss some bonus content into it as well.

But replacing the original cartridge loading sound effect, that's got no excuse.
>>
>>14957138
It went pretty well considering.
