As a prequel it doesn't really do a lot to make callbacks/call forwards to Zeta. It does a few and it establishes the Titans at the very end but compared to other 'prequels' it doesn't delve much into Zeta's material.

I think the worst UC show should be apart from the rest.

The story overall is pretty good but it's seriously weighed down by the whole love triangle thing and Kou being such a shitty protag.

The side characters, music, and mech designs are top tier.

I am glad we got a full OVA without newtype bullshit.

This show fills in a huge gap in the story between Gundam and Zeta. When I first started watching Zeta, I was like " wait, the Federation is evil now? How did that happen?" So in that regard, I think this series is pretty crucial. Kou is has a mind for machines, but I'll admit that he's a pretty weak soldier. However, I'd also like to point out that the protags in EVERY Gundam are weak in the beginning but grow over the course of the story. This is how character development works. Read a book.

The animation tho... It was truly top notch and even my DVD copy still looks great today. Makes me wish I could see how it looks on Blu-ray.

The Federation was always sort of evil, just a lesser evil in the form of a bloated corrupt government that is upholding the status quo rather than a dictatorship. In the original setting outline by Tomino, the wording sort of implies more or less both are to blame for the billions of deaths from indiscriminate use of nuclear weapons, and one of the later episodes in the original 52 episode outline was going to have the Federation attack a JEF shipment headed for Side 3, which is a violation of the Antarctic treaty.

There is no useful or new information learned in 0083 that Zeta didn't tell you. As a prequel it probably hurts itself more than it helps Zeta.

The Mk.II is made to be mas produced so it's even inferior to RX-78-2 but the GP project are a very powerful(at the time) prototypes, thats why it's secret. Nina nina nina, fuck her, thats all i have to say, fuck her. I feel like she betrayed everyone, physically and mentally when she decided to help mother fucking Gato, poor Kou, I actually like the guy when he tries to get to her, it feels like she out of his league and he does not care about that, but when she did that, oh fuck me I literally throw my phone on the floor, yes, fucking floor, it does not break but since then she becomes the character i hate the most, yeah even below Scar in Lion King, even that fucking bastard killed Mufasa, Nina is fucking below Scar, that should tell how much i hate her.

See, I'm so torn up about 0083. As an element of the UC storyline it did nothing. As far as the characters, they were nothing. As far as the internal storyline, it was nothing.

Everything else was pure porn for the eyes. Honestly, it's like they did the complete opposite of Michael Bay's Transformers.

Guys, guilty confession, whenever I tell anyone about Gundam, I ask them if they like space or land combat. If they say space, I say to watch 0083. If they say land, I say to watch 08th MS (and 0080 to be fair)

No no, Moe, I loved 0083 and am proud to say it's what got me into UC Gundam. But the characters are underdeveloped and irrational, and I can't in good conscience give it a 4, it just doesn't merit it in my opinion. As I've said before 0083 is no EVA, it's a popcorn anime, turn the brain off and watch the shiney mechas beat the **** of each other. Its characterization is a large part of that.

This has got to be 1 of the best of the Gundam series there is. Sure there may be to much romance in it for some people, but deep down you can't help but cheer for the socially awkward but very capable rookie pilot hero Kou Uraki
