Why doesn't the Barzam have a shield?

If memory serves, the explanation is that inexperienced pilots couldn't really use the big metal slab on one side of their mech effectively enough to be worth carrying it, and that beam weapons increasingly didn't give a fuck.

And yet the GM 3, the Jegan, and the Geara Doga all went back to using shields right after.

The Hizack and Marasai had shields be it attached or a hand shield and the Galbady grabed whatever spare Hizack shields they had. The Barzam is unique amoungst the Titans grunts in that it doesn't have a shield.

Galbaldy had its own shield. As for Snapfit's shitposting question, it's because they were rapidly losing a war and went for a final push so they wanted the Barzam to be good but also as cheap and easy to make as possible. The shield was just another corner they cut.

eh it's a pretty cool, distinctive grunt. Has a different body structure, a weird-looking gun and feels like it fits the rest of the designs while still standing out and not being yet another Zeon rehash. It's not the worst suit to meme about.

Well the thing about the Refined is that it's basically a Gundam Mk-II cosplaying as a Barzam, it loses a lot of the peculiarities of the original and honestly for a grunt based off the Mk-II the GM III is better.

not really an issue there is clear similarities but also differences as well

besides according to the lore normal Barzam was built with the mkII tech in mind. even though they look nothing alike.

The Refined lacks the legs connecting directly to the chest which make the original look much squatter, the flared "bicep" area leading to a thin joint and then flaring into the armor plate that looks mounted on top of a regular construction forearm, the thrusters/exhaust on the knees and shins, the large square thrusters over the ankles and the oddly large feet in a not quite high heel design.

The Refined is a Mk-II with a Barzam head and vaguely Barzam-like chest and groin, it completely loses the regular's more uncommon design features and has a vague resemblance to it at best. It's fine if you like it but it's very much a standard mobile suit cosplaying as a more distinctive one. Also, things based off the same technologies can look different externally.
