Was it really that bad?

Watching it right now, about 11 episodes in, doesn't seem that bad

It has its ups and downs

similar to Gundam, characters will start PMSing for no reason, be good again at the end of the episode, then at the start of next episode the PMSing starts all over again.

It also has a lot of unlikeable characters.

I am at episode 40 now.

Every episode is amazing. Mecha action nonstop. Zeta blows every gundam out of the water. The animation is also really nice for it's time.

It's not even that I dislike anime directed in a "cookie cutter" way if it is done well, plenty of it is. But Tomino has weird directing quirks, and shows like Zeta and Brain Powerd are my favorite anime BECAUSE of the weird Tominoisms. The guy has been trying to challenge the conventions of the genre since Zambot 3 and imo his attempts to do so have been really great.

Zeta does'nt have usual dramatic arcs were the story and characters develops in a straight forward way. It is all about subtle and slow burning development on multiple fronts at once. In a broad view it seems like not much is happening, but when you pay attention to all the small "moving parts" that are at play and slowly developing episode after episode you are left with something incredibly rich and well developed - there is allot of order behind the chaos.
