At first you think it's going to be like the other shows. The protag's father is a mad scientist who supplies him with a robot and upgrades as the series goes on.
Only he isn't. He is a practical engineer who borders on disappointment in his son. Amuro didn't seem to grow in a nuclear family but rather separately with his overly affectionate mother and an aloof career-minded father. After the first episode, his father is gone, along with the scientist benefactor cliche.

So what the fuck was wrong with Amuro's dad when he meets him again later in the series? Did he suffer brain damage from getting sucked into space?

Basically, yes. Oxygen deprivation.

>Did he suffer brain damage from getting sucked into space?
Yeah
>>14941635
Not confirmed
>>14941637
Well Amuro himself does theorize it when he meets his father again so that's the explanation everyone accepts

Sure, but regardless, he has lessened control over his mental faculties, enough that he dies by tripping down some stairs. He got spaced last time we saw him, so either he has oxygen deprivation brain damage, or he hit his head hard at some point offscreen.

It's also not confirmed that he died when he fell.
