There's no third season. Second season was funded by Cartoon Network with the condition that it revealed the backstory and provided an ending. That was a problem because Chiaki Konaka & co. only had a vague backstory and never envisioned an ending for the series.

In a way, they were setting up for future seasons with the ending. But like >>14940748 says, the ending was trying to explain the idea that The Big O was an ever-ongoing show about mysterious events in a mysterious city full of secrets, just in a crudely explicit manner.

Pretty okay, shame about that needless second season, though admittedly you can't do much about meddling.

The first season and its animation are both orgasmic. Writing wise I found the second season to meh up until the ending which made no sense I think it was supposed to be a meta thing about how they're all just actors on a stage or something The animation quality don't really drop so much as lose that warmth that older anime had. As for the creators not having an ending in mind that just seems like a great way to shoot yourself in the foot.

In my opinion it is truly a must-watch show in the mecha genre. The plot, the tone of the narrative, the characters, the action were al good. The mystery is confusing (especially the revelation), but it's always intriguing. The show doesn't insult your intelligence as much as other mainstream anime likes to do and it does require some thinking if you are following the overall plot. Although I hate to use the terms I like how the mechs are basically super-robot themes done with real-robot twist.

It also has one of the very best music compilations for a mecha show ever.

Greatest /m/ show. Not even kidding, it fucking ruled. Even with the inferior (though still really good) second season.

The Big O is my favorite mecha anime. So much so tthat I'm including a giant robot fight at the end of my game with Big O-inspired robots.

What makes the Big O stand out to me is the tone of the robots. They seem so old and stoic, but at the same time, they can move fast when they need to. It's interesting to me. That and the setting is just so awesome along with the animation in the first season.

I really wish we could get a End of Big O movie like Eva got where they fix the ending to not be so gay so that we could get a Big Fau fight that's on the level of the first Big Duo fight, but it is what it is.

Any show that starts off an episode with noir sex jazz is going to be an instant favorite of mine. Although I will say that the second season was kind of a step down but that was due to CN being shits not letting the creator do what he wanted but still it was very enjoyable. I wish there were more anime that had a great noir atmosphere that Big O had.
