I'd say it's more than just "callbacks". Mega Monster Battle is a little weird if you haven't seen the series, and Saga puts a lot into being a sequel to Dyna (and also Cosmos, to a lesser extent) despite being set in a different universe.

Saga's problem for me at least is that it's just kind of a mess. Most of the movie is an excuse for AKB48 girls to run around in tight leather outfits with the Ultraman stuff kind of tacked on as an afterthought. Zero's host is an insufferable twat and never really stops being an insufferable twat. Dyna and Cosmos don't get much in the way of the spotlight despite both Asuka and Musashi being headlining characters.

Granted, the other main reason for MBE's hiatus was due to CR randomly picking up various Ultras, so the project would probably get rendered redundant, like the Max fansubs. The kicker is, Dyna is the one show Champ didn't hire an outsider translator to tackle, so this hurts all the more.

It's always going to be one of Japan's oldest and most recognizable pop culture icons and even though it's had its ups and downs over the years, it's still a beloved series 50 years later. Considering a bunch of them are being streamed internationally on Crunchyroll now, there is definite demand for Ultra.

Yeah, it's not quite as much of a moneymaker and Sentai and Rider, but it's still going pretty strong.

This episode felt like the end half of a two parter that doesn't exist. Everything is rushed through with little to no setup and Metron is painted as the villain despite not wanting to harm any innocents and just wanting to get revenge on Juggler.

Ultraman works the same way as any other toku. Whoever the newest lead Ultra is just happens to be the strongest one ever or the one with the most potential. Before Orb it was X, and before him Ginga, then Zero and so on.

Max is still the fastest. Taro still has the most brute strength. Leo is still the most skilled. Each Ultra has an area they excel in or something that sets them apart from the others.

Actually, it used to not be like that, except with Ace and Taro (Taro was fucking silly with how OP he was). Mebius is the most obvious example, but 80 was a researcher, not a soldier, and Leo was only as good as he was because Seven was his trainer who guided him through a majority of the fights. Zero was the one that mushed in the Kamen Rider logic that new is always better.

The problem is that Ultra heads are usually kind of bulbous. We're so used to seeing those proportions that seeing an Ultra with more "normal" proportions like Ultraseven X, especially when he's next to other Ultras, looks off.

I watched The Next last night. It wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be. It felt very messy and I had a hard time caring about the MC's family because they had almost no character beyond "son is sick."

Points for Tak Matsumoto melting about five guitars on the soundtrack though.

The updated seven is referred to as "heisei ultraseven", they were from the mid to late 90s. I don't think there are subs available, at least I've never heard anyone here mention them. I''m pretty curious about them myself.

For a fan of the older shows I would recommend Max (brought back a lot of older and some new directors, has a classic feel) and Mebius (more modern but features many of the Showa ultras)

Blue Ultras are generally speed/energy attack-focused forms (Tiga Sky, Dyna Miracle, Cosmos Luna, Nexus Junis Blue, etc.). In the Showa universe, they apparently signify a scientist caste (e.g. Hikari). Agul is blue because his power comes from the ocean compared to Gaia's coming from the Earth.

Victory is a weird exception to the "blue secondary Ultra" rule by being mostly black. His power comes from deep within the Earth compared to Ginga's future-space origins. He does get a blue form from Hikari later on though.

Kinda weird that The Origin Saga is supposed to start next month but we don't have shit for information aside from set leaks.

The type of reveal doesn't matter (to me). The reason it counts as the same is because the main-team/supporting cast don't actively know throughout all/most of the series. God, only complaint is that Orbcalibur prop design looks too thick and heavy for thin arm Orb. Everytime he swings, it feel so wild and slow. He didn't even utilize the 4 power unless its for finisher or certain time.

What's the reason for zagi to be so weak in the final battle with neuxt/nova ? When in the prequel stage show and magazine story, he can put on a fight with Nova and the two are almost the same powerful as another
Isn't he soupse to be the second strongest being of the universe, the equivalent of the Devil or anti Christ if Nova is the God or Christ ? Yet his final fight is so one sided, it doesn't even feel like final episode fight.

I actually think Orb's smaller cast and more grounded atmosphere works in its favor. Sure we may not get the big traditional defense team shenanigans, but the fact that the entire main cast is just five close people means there's a much tighter dynamic between them that makes them stronger and more likeable characters as a whole.

It always was,despite being a fusion of two ultras with distinct abilities it was always the most boring. It never uses the sluggers, the lance is too short to be effective, all other forms were stronger, despite being labeled as faster it never looked faster, and overall Origin does everything HS does better.

VTL shouldn't exist. It's a waste of space and time, not that take too much but it's obvious Tsuburaya include it for not pissing off the hardcore ultrafags. Shibukawa could be a local policeman, he act like one during most episodes anyway. I don't think Origin is even that powerful without the sword. He doesn't really have any special abilities aside from standard beams. There's a reason he doesn't just open with Origin in fights most of the time.
