I am going to needlessly blog and bitch about Wing.

I'm about fourteen episodes into this show. I'm having a hard time enjoying myself. I've enjoyed literally every Gundam I saw before it, from MSG to G, but this one is really getting me down.

The five main characters are all "super soldier" types and I don't like their ways of talking or acting for the most part. 3/5ths of them are assholes. In other series this was never super pronounced to my perception, or characters were redeemed in other fashions- this Gundam has, for me at least, so far failed to deliver in any way on this end.

I like the grunt MS, but anything that isn't an Aires seems to explode at the drop of a hat. Besides the one time Zechs used a Leo I feel like I've yet to see any of the mass-production suits actually challenge the main cast besides just being there. I don't like any of the Gundams.

I've heard sometimes that there is supposed to be "politicking" in this show. If there is it's been some weak shit. MSG, for its lack of it, made bureaucratic issues apparent or at least played them in an entertaining manner. To take it further, Dougram for instance pulled this even better and make both sides have merits that made it interesting to watch them clash- it was the good of the Earth and Deloyer together, or it was sovereignty at Earth's expense. As far as I can tell the dynamic of Wing is that the UESA was trying to keep peace through force, to no avail, and in turn OZ is wiping them out, for what would seem to be similar reasons.

The action is animated fine but feels really lackluster regardless. I just wind up watching OZ butcher the UESA and then watching both job miserably to either the Gundams or other outside parties. In other series you would sometimes have a nearly invincible Gundam, but they at least felt like they were being challenged, be it by MOTW, sheer weight of numbers, or competent pilots and tactics, even if in inferior machines- think stuff like the hover bomb attack in MSG or the Zolo Boot fleet in Victory.

It just isn't grabbing me or making me happy like literally every other Gundam I watched did.
I'm going to keep watching it and I'm going to finish it, because I want to watch as much Gundam as I can, but damn. Do I just have shit taste?

A large population of this board had Wing as their first Gundam. It doesn't even have nostalgia value. It is that bad. The political plot only makes sense when you find out Operation Meteor was ruined right out the gate, most of the pilots aren't even following it, and if they had: the Gundams and the Whitefang would have been all setups for bad guys (the real Trowa Barton's father) of Endless Waltz to rule the earthsphere.

For North American audience, Wing is probably their first entry to Gundam series. I grew up watching 0079 and zeta before wing , etc came up the surface. I ended up watching wing as well after that.
As whether wing is worth watching or not... I can only speak from my experience here, so bear with me.
Having watched UC 0079-0093 and wing, it requires two complete different mindset. UC offers a very personal story of your protagonist struggle as they were dragged through the war , Wing on the other hand felt like using an impersonal approach to the characters and not really evokes my emotion at all. It's very cut and dry, different from UC approach which is very emotional at times.
I remember reading Gundam wing's director interview somewhere, he said that he didn't like Tomino approach in Gundam and tried to use a different method / approach in storyline. This probably explain why people either like Wing and hate UC, and like UC and hate wing. Rarely you encounter people who like them both.
So in my opinion, if you have a lot of spare times in your hand, watch it. So that you can form your own opinion whether you are going to like the series or not. Atleast if you ended up hating it, you can explain to everyone on the internet forum as to why you hate it logically.

I might be wrong but from what I have seen and heard on multiple forums throughout the years, and on Reddit, the majority of Gundam Wing fans are from the United States, as the show was shown on television when they were younger. Many are fans of it because of nostalgic reasons alone, and are not willing to admit to any flaw in the show. The people that are actually able to be honest, can see that the show has quite many flaws, critically speaking, yet not everybody looks at a show with a critical eye. It all comes down to if you like it or not, but overall, Wing isn't really that liked in the big picture.What I'm trying to say is that yes, there are Wing haters, plenty of them. Also, remember that Gundam 00 is pretty much a remake of Wing.

You're a few episodes away from the point of the show where the Gundam pilots suddenly hit a brick wall in the effectiveness of their fighting methods, and things sorta start going to hell. They have to pick themselves up again and figure out how to take on tougher enemies that are in better positions and machines.

And then about 10-15 episodes later, the challenge sadly disappears again. It rises again slightly with the introduction of better grunts again, but not long after there's no more real challenge except for a couple of decent fight scenes involving grunts around episode 40 and 45 (webm related).

It's up to you if you want to continue watching, though.

If it was not for the plot armor of the gundam pilots and certain a location budget concerns, Leo's would not be considered to be made of explodium. When plot armored characters get I Leo's, they dominate. But that is one of the downsides of Wing; individuals trump everything, from nations to wars.

I can see what you mean, but stuff like Heero promising to kill Duo TWICE and not following through just accentuates my distaste. Is this gonna be the point where the midseason upgrades show up? Oh and IMHO it also depends on how well you handle really silly, campy things. Sometimes Gundam W does some stuff that makes NO sense or is just laughable. I am able to laugh at it and move on without thinking it's lame. Some people aren't. It helps though if you can laugh at something that is funny by accident and still think it's cool.

The complex political twist and turns will keep you intrigued,the awesome Gundam fight scenes will knock you dead, the chemistry between the boys is loveable, and I personally quite liked the romance in there too even when Relena was being a bit of a melodramatic nut, this is an anime classic, love it or hate it, it's a must-watch
