Categorically worse. They were immediately outclassed by the GN-X, which themselves were slightly inferior to the Generation 3 Gundams (although not by a long way).

What. Do you mean GN-XIV? Ahead was made long after original GN-X introduced. It was commander unit where GN-XIII was for grunts.
Even Andrei got happy when he finally managed to pilot an Ahead late in the series.

This. The lineart is terrible, but after owning the HG it grows on me. It's not a handsome or heroic design, but it's brutish and menacing with oni demon imagery fitting for A-Laws.

I can't believe how much difference a slight change in angles makes.

I still prefer the GN-X but the Ahead went up by a lot in my book.

It's just another case of terrible lineart. I personally like the Sakigake because it ups the ogre-ness with the box samurai head, although it makes me wonder if Bushido/Graham used a proper GN-X during the timeskip ever.

Not really... They had considerably better performance than the GN-X III that were in use at around the same time. As for the GN-X IV, which was considered a successor to the ahead, those were made after the A-Laws were disbanded based on innovator tech.

This started after Setsuna tracked down Captain Freeloader at his apartment. Billy kind of didn't do anything since the end of S1.

The original Masurao was another Ahead variant until Billy took over and scrapped it.
