Regild is a real word. To gild is cover it with gold or to be wealthy/privileged. I watched this show up to the point where the main characters meet up with the spacenoids who want to take over the world. I seem to recall it being really confusing and with characters just kind of doing stuff without an explanation of motivation.

I loved the art style and the mobile suit design, and some of the characters were fun. Is it worth picking it back up?

Also, why haven't they made an Advance of Zeta anime? I feel like that would be an easy hit.

The new era begins!

The turbulent era known as the Universal Century has ended. Now, mankind looks towards prosperity and peace in the new era known as the Regild Century (R.C.). One of the most important resources in this era is the Capital Tower - a space elevator which towers over the land connecting Earth to space. Its purpose, to transport the Photon Batteries the Earth relies on for power. It is worshiped as a holy place.

Tasked with protecting the tower, one day on a practice mission, young Capital Guard cadet, Bellri Zenam is attacked by a high-performance G-Self Mobile Suit. Despite having never before encountered the G-Self, he feels a strange connection to it and its pilot, a space pirate called Aida Surugan.

Little does Bellri know that he is about to uncover truths which will shake the entire Regild Century.

Gundam Reconguista in G celebrated the Gundam franchise's 35th anniversary, and marked the first return of franchise creator Yoshiyuki Tomino as chief director of an original Gundam series since Turn A Gundam. After a theatrical premiere of the first three episodes in August 2014, the anime premiered on Japanese television in October 2014.

I've been going through the UC Gundam timeline and the other mainline Tomino series and I should be arriving at G-Reco soon enough. I'm currently halfway through Turn A.

Given all the skepticism and controversy surrounding the series, I would like someone to sell me on G-Reco. The hate for it is overabundant on big anime websites but there seems to be a very intelligent argument for it. I just want to go in with positive expectations.

The main issue people have around Greco is that it doesn't plainly explain events all the time. The series is low on exposition but tells you a lot in actions and normal dialogue. Even in a lot of the humour the dialogue is not just throw away and a lot of the time characters won't be repeating the same point again and again

To illustrate this it is best to use an example which means a minor spoiler. The MC Bellri and friends ends up on an enemy pirate ship, they are locked up for a while but then he agrees to fight. This confused people as they go "why is bellri turning on his own fraction?" Well cause they missed that Bellri is part of the capital guard not the capital army (a new fraction from the same territory). This is stated by Bellri, but only directly once in this situation. After that people were confused why he was not locked up any more, not able to see he had earned their trust

You see how the confusion built up from people making a simple mistake, missing a line people ended up baffled while not able to infer the obvious. I also think it is cause many anime viewers don't like when events don't fit their expectation, so go the show is wrong. This meant people reacted badly to any weird moment, which on top of general Tomino general eccentricness just did for some people

But if you do get Greco is a really interesting show, it demonstrates it's themes really well and you get a lot of fractions manoeuvring with and around each other. Each with characters who aren't just filled with sob stories so you feel bad when they die but have their own quirks and views. Which they express through actions, how they interact with people and what they say on an event even if that is not an accurate summary of them. While not deep characters many demonstrate concepts very well and it creates a realism in their goofiness. The reason you do get people who fanboy over greco is few shows do that well and when it clicks with you it is something special

G-Reco is the only anime where my future prediction turn out false.

It my very first episode when we were introduce with the SU-Cord Pope, I really thought that this was the big bad meanie, the final boss using his SU-Cord Mech to conquer the world.

It turns out that The pope is a very kind man and has nothing to do with it and are deeply disturbed when lives are lost and taboos being broken

And the whole reason why people are killing each other was this dude who become tired and disgust at where humanity are going to. A millennia of peace has made humanity fragile,weak and lose the edge for basic survival and he intend to end it by introducing war back to the people by spreading out taboo tech everywhere hoping it will eventually created conflict

The funny part is the guy who responsible for creating this conflict in the first place has no experience about war and acted surprise when everyone else in the series don't know how to war

I disagree, the fact you should pay attention doesn't mean you can't take a breath. It isn't like you are studying for an exam you just look at what a person says and how it is said. It is just watching basic human interaction. It isn't like you need to get 100% at every step to understand it all, the things you do need to know to get the basic story are all stated.

People have seriously started to exaggerate how much you need to pay attention. It seems like the idea that you should listen to all the dialogue and not just let it drift out the next ear is seen as work. I guess this is why I hate a lot of stuff where that is the case, it bores me as little tweaks can instead add personality that actually tells you something about the character. Scenes like >>14966655 aren't needed to understand the show, the scene is a breath and a light joke but it also says something about Bellri. It shows how he is overconfident but it comes back to bite him, this is something we see happen later (like when he goes out on his own and gets caught in a net) and he gets called out on it. It is a little thing but it does add a layer many shows lack just going for a random gag that really doesn't say much and can be ignored.

The whole pay attention stuff really came about cause people missed basic plainly stated facts that they shouldn't be.

I don't really see how that is true. The middle has them spend a good amount of time in a few areas and has probably the most sit down and talk sections. The only kinda messy part is that fractions change who they are working with but any changes in that regard or their plan for an episode get stated at the start of each. That part is meant to be dynamic to show the shifting boundaries that happen, it reminded me of the second half of zeta in some ways.

If anything it is the ending that is messy.

I absolutely agree, I thought the middle was really snappy. They spend long enough on the far side of the moon to get an idea of what's going on and decide to go to Venus, you get the GIT after that to keep it exciting, they spent a little shorter time at Venus to keep the pace up and still get the last 'denouement', and then it's back to the Earth for the final battles. Every episode something exciting happened and the story went a different way than you were expecting, while still keeping the same key goals and motivations.

I just kinda get the feeling that Banrise weren't behind him on this. The man has some pretty out-there ideas when it comes to his shows, and he hasn't had a successful anime since ZZ. They didn't have faith in him, so they made basic gunpla and gave the show a weak timeslot in order to mitigate the damages.

But because of that, they gave him more control over the show. Then Tomino delivers a series that sold well, beating the supposed Gundam-killer AZ and kept up with IBO in terms of video sales. The old man's success is the "fuck you" to Banrise.

I kinda liked the ending myself. It was like, all the little skirmishes built up to this, the first big battle in a thousand years. Rather than solve the issues through diplomacy, everyone just tries to take what they want and throws soldiers at each other. People in the show saw it for the hell it was and wanted to bail while the Megafauna tried to stop everything TSA/CB-style.

In the end, people were reminded of the true nature of war. It's not glamorous like Mask thinks it is. It's awful, and the Megafauna sets out to try and solve the issues that caused it through discussion between the various groups. And it doesn't tell who was right and who was wrong on those issues minus the guys who push for war.

It was an ending I liked the more I thought about it.

Tomino isn't big on exposition dump, in some cases you won't be able to get the motivation until later, in other cases you will have had to pay close attention to what happened before and "connect the dots". Tomino shows are really dense and subtle in their execution, and purposefully messy, in order to use direction to explicate the themes of constant misunderstanding and chaos in human interactions.

From what I heard Tomino left the production of ZZ's early episodes like directing, story-boarding, script-writing, ect. to the the younger staffs at Sunrise considering that ZZ was airing back-to-back after Z. After that he probably take over ZZ after it reach the low-end at Moon-moon arc.

I have to say that the lighter feel to it makes me feel a little uneasy. So far the only thing that made me feel any weight while watching through to episode two was a nod to previous UC series... ok, the pacing for the story is hurting me too much, way too much. Maybe I'm being stingy, but the quality for this series is lacking and I hope it's not because Yoshiyuki Tomino is over 70 years old now. I'm still giving it a chance though, more of a chance than I'll ever give Seed.

I'm kinda hesitate a bit to jump into G-reco, although i think the MS design and animation is pretty smooth. How's the characters go so far? The one thing I can't stand from Gundam anime is the annoying (badly written?) characters, overtly emotional MC, and things like that. I'm afraid G-reco will have similar stereotype, but hopefully not. Currently I'm watching Turn A and I love that most of the characters are likeable people (or at least I can understand their characteristics well).

Greco is plenty melodramatic. In fact I think it feasts in it. But it doesn't use cheap shots such as suddenly putting full focus on some background character who suddenly has an extremely tragic circumstance for the sole purpose of killing them on in some tear jerky scene meant to force an emotional response from the viewer.

Mask has the makings of a hero of the people in many ways, but it's all perceived on his part. He comes from an oppressed class, the Kuntala. He joins a corrupt system (CA) with the intent of rising up to the top to pave a way for his people. And despite his bravery and skill he's mocked by his fellow soldiers who are non-Kuntala. Of course, the Kuntala aren't really oppressed and most of the discrimination they face is a matter of circumstance, like Kuntala being touchy about the subject or not being particularly affluent (Mask mentions they don't live in that one rich section of the tower, Sanct Porto or w/e).

But you can tell he believes he's meant to be a hero who will somehow raise his people up by becoming a military hero (hence the Kuntala pride nonsense). He's passionate to the point of tears about raising the status of Kuntala and he believes he's suffering as a guinea pig for that purpose. It's also why he turns Bellri into the son of elites and a tyrant in the making, a villain that represents the personification of the shadowy elites that have oppressed Kuntala for so long.

But the reality is that Colonel Cumpa and the other Venusians (from GIT lab) sympathize with the Kuntala because they too believe they were given the short stick. And there's little convincing evidence that Mask and co. were picked out to be guinea pigs for some amazingly powerful new MS (and in fact, a non-Kuntala, Dellenson, was the real guinea pig who was given an untested prototype to fight a pirate ship basically by himself), because Mask was the one that expressed a desire to be a "guinea pig" in the first place.

And of course Bellri doesn't care about the Rayhuntons, he even dislikes the fact because he can't fuck his hot sister.

Thematically, Luin is the main antagonist because he's the one who is most driven by the stories he was told. He wants to play a hero and has developed a character because of it, but is driven to the point of insanity by it. You can see it early on, when he goes out of his way to defend Bellri from the older bullies, even though Bellri doesn't mind them that much. But later we find out Mask envies Bellri for being talented enough to skip grades, and doesn't seem to particularly like Bellri at all. His actions are disingenuous because he acts how he thinks he should as a character: very noble and diligent. But of course, later on he becomes completely unhinged and murderous, which he justifies by turning Bellri into a villain.

Is there anyone else who doesn't treat G-Reco as either a complete failure or the greatest masterpiece of all time? It's a 6/10 for me, I liked the first half but the show fell apart and got really dull in the second half with the only real highlight being Raraiya recovering her memories. Production values are good, some of the characters were likable but didn't get enough screentime later on, most MS designs are really cool, ED and first OP are great but the visuals that accompany them were horribly lazy, second half of the show suffers significantly from both nothing happening and not having enough episodes. In the end I was mostly disappointed because I came in expecting a happy Tomino masterpiece, the second coming of Turn A, and instead I got mediocrity after a promising start.

No particular issues with war or sneaky political movement
At least casually racist about Kuntala at points

Yet for all intents and purposes he is a good guy. He simply wishes to improve his position for no other goal than he wishes to rule, really he is the guy Luin should hate but is blinded by having it in for Bellri. In any other show Klim would easily be a bad guy for simply wanting power, but here we only see him and Bellri on opposite sides once. Even then you can probably argue Aida is a dual protagonist who is always on his side. He isn't always fighting for the same thing as the megafauna but is always an ally and a pretty useful one.

You just don't really see a character like Klim, either he'd turn evil or be a complete joke character (he is used for jokes but even by the end of the show Klim is a real threat in a MS). Now could he do terrible things in the future? Very possible, hard to tell if he has it in him. I could see it happening but he isn't an ideologue or anything so he may just try to be a okay ruler. He has no agenda to force just believes he is the best for the job. Despite his backstory being that of the bad guy rival he simply isn't. In fact despite all expectations, he is a pretty decent guy with flaws.
