Zeta is a fun series. I know that Gundam fans will grab this one up, but if you are new to the series this is a good one to start with. The animation is reasonable for a TV series and the writing is better than several of the other series in the Gundam universe. So, if you want to dip your toe's in the world of Mobile Suit Gundam then Zeta is a great place to start.

What I mean by inconsistency is the fact that no single "faction" in the series had a concrete signature feature in their suits, not like MSG where Zion suits were 1 eyed, and the feddy suits had exhaust vents in their chests.
I'm gonna stop you there with the fact that there were Zeon suits with vents on their chests as well. Also the fact that weapon development doesn't work like that in real life either. Companies make weapons. These weapons are sold to whomever wants to use them. In this case Anaheim Electronics makes mobile suits for both sides and sells them. Same goes for the development of the suits, both sides develop all kinds of crazy suits.

I appreciated Zeta Gundam for what it portrayed: The absolute mess that Earth and the Colonies were in following a war that saw the population of humanity literally decimated. If the show had featured the 0078 characters saddling up exactly the way they had when they were kids (and they were kids in 0078) then it would have felt weird, like no time had passed. The 0078 characters are clearly disillusioned and suffering from the trauma of the war.
The multiple factions made the show a little hard to follow simply because you weren't sure who to root for. The Titans were made to be plainly evil but the AEUG kinda came off as terrorists. The EFSF was only a shadow of what it had been in 0078. That's something that contrasts sharply with 0078 - even when the line between good and evil blurred, it was still obvious that Amuro was the hero. Root for him and you're fine. You did not really have that in Zeta.
I do agree that the mobile suit designs were off. I liked how the EFSF had absorbed the Zeonic research teams and that explained the presence of Hi-Zacks and some of the other Titan prototypes. I appreciated the evolution of the GM line in the GM-II and Nemo units. But other than the Zeta Gundam and the Hyaku Shiki, a lot of the new suits looked kind of dumb. Bound Doc is a great example - it looks needlessly complicated in a "Turn A" kind of way.

I think it is the opposite that hols true. Tomino's characters are messy, erratic, and particularly realistic in that they are all kind of fucked in some way or another, have multifaceted personalities that lead to internal contradictions, shitty justifications for their actions, make dumb and sometimes random comments, etc. They feel like real people because of these things. Tomino highlights these features because his main themes are the lack of understanding that comes about in human interaction and the chaos and tragedy and results from it.

I just started Zeta after having watched 0079 and okay I was warned and all but still, is the opening the only cheerful thing there is about this show?

I don't see how Bask and Jamitov were useless, they didn't even pilot. there jobs were political manipulation and punching people, and they did that competently.
