Yes. I think Gundam does have standards. Pretty good standards even, because Amura set a sort of benchmark for Gundam pilots and most series have been able to follow it pretty thoroughly.

Like, if you compare Kamille or Setsuna at the start of their show and at the end, you'll notice they are very different characters. Their development is a story in itself.

Not only does most Gundam MC:s have character development arcs, their arcs are sometimes also not as obvious and cliche as you'd expect.
