It had some good parts, and I liked the characters, but the writing completely dropped the ball in the third act and and wasted all of its time on the obstacles that didn't matter (Salty Dog) such that when it came to the villains that did matter (Puck and the Kiltgang) they had to just pull a bunch of shit out of their ass because they got to the final two episodes and realized they hadn't bothered to set up ANYTHING.

If anime writers know basic plot structure, or even just had bothered to edit the first draft of their script, it would be a really great show. But because they half assed it, its ruined by its many failures.

It was a very enjoyable series and one of my favourites from recent years. The designs were also quite interesting because of the small scale ordinaries on Earth and the giant multi-stage impactors for space, both of which had different design styles.

Not really. The robots and action were great (when there was any), but the characters were bland as fuck (except some of the villains) and the whole thing was way too long.

It's a show that could have been fantastic with just a few adjustments. Better pacing, better focus, avoid repetition and waste COUGHFLAREENGINE and we could have had something really special. As it is, though, it's mostly eye candy with little substance.

The absolute lack of Puck!Hana doujins is the greatest crime of all.

This, I feel like Captain Earth could've been a great series, but the few problems it did have kept it anchored at a mediocre level.

The show should've had the villains' backstories interwoven in a more natural way rather than just taking 8 filler episodes to dedicate to each.
This could've helped with pacing and actually making the viewer feel a connection to them.

Also I wish there was more of an epilogue to wrap things up, it ended on one of those really abrupt notes where it's just a short scene seconds after the battle with two characters.
Also it's even debatable whether Hana and the Daichi are alive

It still was really enjoyable though, I kept watching despite it's problems and I guess that speaks for itself.

The funny thing is, that would actually work.

Using a laser that pulses in time with audio, you can cause a thin membrane to vibrate when hit. In essence, you can turn the paper cup into a speaker.

And if you have the setup to have accurate rangefinding based on that same laser, you can in turn READ the vibrations of the cup and perform the effect in reverse, turning it into a microphone.

So "super spy laser cup" is, in fact, the most legit science you saw in Captain Earth. It just only works if you sit in the path of the laser setup, and turn off the lights to minimize signal pollution.

As for WHY you would use that instead of a phone... no idea.

I really do wish they'd developed the antagonists better. Pic related had a lot of material that could have been milked out of it, for example. The entire Salty Dog plot beyond greasy-hair cup man's and his being their agent was unnecessary.

You know, when I first watched this series I thought the story would actually pull a fast one on us. I thought that all the talk of childhood ending and kids growing up would actually end up referring to the villains, who'd mature past their childish, selfish libido-sucking phase and evolve to higher life forms as a result of prolonged fighting the MC and the rest of the gang, and having spent their entire conscious lives living among humans.

Instead, by episode 4 I was seriously bored, and I started just skimming episodes every 10-15 seconds to catch the main plot points while avoiding the most egregious stupidity. By the time I hit episode 10 I literally fell asleep mid-monologue. That's when I knew I had to drop it.

How many of you came up with a rewrite of the series to make it better?

It spent too much time developing characters that ended up having very little payoff in the end, It purposefully kept the audience in the dark and had no explanation for certain things, It spent too much time naval gazing. The action scenes were really, really lack-luster for the build up they were given. There were no feelings of risk involved and everything had no chance of going wrong.

I dropped Captain Earth the minute I saw that pink haired chick doing some stupid bunny-hop while piloting her mecha. As for all those recs for Sidonia, I think you should just skip the anime and start reading the manga. It's bleaker, the humor works better, and it's prettier without the CG. Only thing you lose is the excellent sound/BGM from the anime.

Captain Earth had a lot of the typical Bones problems. It had an interesting premise and a decent start, but a few episodes in, it slowed to a ridiculous crawl until the last couple of episodes, where it feels like the writers suddenly remembered they had a plot an ending to do, making the final stretch feel rushed and full of asspulls.

Eureka Seven, Xamdou, Heroman, and Star Driver all do the same thing and suffer for it. Probably not coincidental that all of these feature a white and red robot (or whatever Xamdou was) and had coming-of-age themes.
