>>14913599
Maybe not objectively but in terms of overall enjoyment, yeah it's probably my favourite series in the franchise. I liked the leaner/mostly filler-free plot and message that was optimistic without being hypocritical (It's the only Gundam series I know of besides the original and Turn A that did UNDERSTANDING right).
Also the visuals have aged surprisingly well for a nearly 10 year old show. I still put an episode or two on the background sometimes.

this
After binge watching the entire Gundam 00 series (including the 2 hour movie) I thought I would celebrate by writing my very first review. And what better place to begin in the Gundam 00 series than the very installment that began its downhill descent.
I apologize in advance, as this will be less of an actual review and more of me nit-picking at each aspect that made season 2 slightly less enjoyable in comparison to season 1. While season 1 more or less established Celestial Being's role, season 2 delves even deeper and attempts to explain its origins. The ideas are fresh and promising but the style of execution was not.
The story was not bad. A lot of the elements that made the previous season enjoyable (complex characters, well animated fight scenes) were still reminiscent. You have Setsuna and his crew dealing with new and highly advanced mobile suits while balancing the antagonists from the previous season as well as a new threat, the Innovators. Not to mention characters still tackling down the reoccurring theme of "war is bad, we have to use force and we're hypocrites because we don't know how else to solve it." So yeah, you have some exciting new elements but at the same time you can't help but feel that most of it is a bit overdone. I'm referring to your generic 'have a problem, find enemy, battle enemy, level up' on a continuous cycle. While this issue was only minor in the first season, it becomes more problematic in this season because you have too much to discover, most of the episode time allotted to fight scenes, and a huge cast that is rotating on screen time yet barely anything is learned about them. Which leads into what I'm going to discuss next.
My other biggest concern was with how they handled the characters. They used lots of screen time to introduce new characters but not so much towards developing them. What little development time they had was often rushed so it could transition into another battle scene.
>>14914852
>continuation
Not saying that character development can't also take place in that type of setting but having a one on one conversation is much different than shouting angrily from a mobile suit with bad communication lines.
Also without going into too much spoilers, I have to say that the most insulting thing you can do to a well developed character is to have them replaced with a carbon copy that looks and sounds the same but all under a different name and personality. Seriously? I thought Sunrise had more respect for their characters but I guess it's been proven otherwise. Don't even get me started on the romance subplots because some of them were just downright awful.
I realize that what I'm saying in this review doesn't exactly match with my rating but I still thoroughly believe that Gundam 00 season 2 is enjoyable and worth your time if you liked season 1. While it's not as successful as its predecessor, the all around feeling of seeing the original cast return and 'grown up' is worth it.
>>14913599
G-Reco is much better than Gundam 00
>>14914852
There's a reason for that. The Japanese "fans" were complaining that the show wasn't "Gundam enough" for sometimes inane reasons like the Gundams having NO MOUTH VENTS and not following the traditional formula. It got so bad that it started affecting the morale of the crew working on the series and Bandai forcibly stepped in to make their own adjustments somewhere around the middle of the season 1 (see pic related).
Basically, the director had to fight tooth and nail to keep as much of his vision intact as possible and it's a miracle the series got to finish as well as it did.
You also have to remember that 00 came immediately after the massive commercial success that was SEED and SEED Destiny, whose fanbase at the time had a large amount of influence on the way the franchise was perceived in the mainstream.
>>14914874
>G-Reco
G-Reco faggots are very boring
>>14914852
>>14914854
I honestly I had no problems with the way the series played out. There are even parts of season 2 I liked over season 1, so I personally wouldn't call it a "downhill descent" by any means. Yes, there were bumps along the way but none of it was plot or character-breaking enough for it not make sense or break my immersion in the story.
It's funny, I re-watched the show recently and my personal feelings is that the strongest parts were the middle portion (mid S1-mid S2) and ending (movie), with some dragging in between. There are also many little things I managed to catch on my second go-through I didn't notice before so if you're ever keen to revisit the show, I can say there's probably new things to unpack.
I'll watch all of it some day. I'm going to assume that the characters all get better as the story progresses but it had one of the most grating main casts I'd ever come across in a mecha anime during the few episodes of it that I watched (I ended up dropping it and then trying Giant Gorg out on a random whim, so I guess I'm thankful for 00 for that much atleast)

>>14916906
Were they actually gay?
>>14916999
no, only Tieria is gay
Season one was pretty good. I'm not a fan of the overall art direction, but the animation actually did well and did a good bringing it to life. And the Celetial Being's clear and immediate motivation, "A War to end all Wars," had a dynamic entry into the earthsphere, to destroy any and all. That dodges a lot of the usual, contrived motivations many shows only begin to convey in backstory. You'd figure more military shows would have a fairly clear mission from the get go, even it doesn't necessarily get the scope of the big picture until part way in.

I just finished episode 16 and they did a good job of conveying a sense of danger via how telegraphed the A-LAWS rounding up of the coup faction/Katharon/CB was.

That's the reason why I don't understand the people who ship her with Setsuna when he doesn't show any romantic interest in her or anyone else.

Does 00 have a Char clone? You could argue that Graham is, but that is how lose your definition of a Char is. Graham is an ace, and later wears a mask, but he has no motives like Char and other Char clones have. He was just really bent on taking out those gundams, which is what everyone wanted.
I would argue that Al-Saachez is more of a Char clone than Graham is, but he's not really a Char either.
>>14941129
S1 tried to avoid a lot of standard Gundam tropes, so there isn't a Char clone.
Some viewers complained that S1 wasn't 'proper Gundam'.
S2 half-assedly made Graham into a Char clone, so viewers would stop complaining about it.
Prince Ali is not a Char clone in S1, and he's barely in S2. Graham is closer, but like I said, they half-assed it, almost on purpose.

Gundam 00 it's the best AU not only for story ( it has some ups and downs) but for a great mixture of mecha design, animation, visual HD (one of the first, if not the first), good characters and an interesting setting.
A large part of the credit also goes to the stuff. Mizushima said that it was a time full of stress, but he managed to bring home a good score. Animators have worked well too. Yes, even it's a pity that they have succumbed to a simpler design for S2, but well, design remains quite high.

People didn't like it as much because Setsuna is given the Jesus suit and a lot of battles turn out "how do we make it so he can't use 00R this time" IIRC as well as back to kind of the status quo of Gundam.
I've already said this but the thing that annoyed the shit out of me is that Al pretty much drops any momentum he gained in S1, 3/4ths of the time he opens his mouth is to say Marie, and he's back to being a sub-optimal pilot again. CUTE
>>14954635
Well I'll give you that, although it didn't always seem like a deus ex machina as battles weren't usually straight forward. The Gundams usually had to be spread out or even in different locations entirely, the Ptolemy would need defending, and long range support or other factors would come into play too.
Yeah Allelujah did become pretty boring and was just kinda there, although I don't know where his character could've gone since he blew up the remaining super solider research lab. It would've been nice to see his MS do a little more though, especially since Kyrios early on did things like bombing runs and missile fire support whereas Arios was more the "go fast" MS which occasionally offered piggy backs.
Tieria or at least the Seravee bothered the shit out of me, Virtue had a good knack of blowing shit up but even when Seravee got even more guns practically every shot would miss and he'd constantly get shot up with a failing shield. I suppose another way of thinking is that it's a nice change of pace that the Gundams were repeatedly outpaced by arms proliferation making things much more desperate.

>>14913665
Wow, you're laying it on thick today, huh bud?
The problem is both season 1 and 2 are perfectly enjoyable, but the difference is if you think about season 2 at all it falls apart completely. You have to enjoy it for the action because the plot really doesn't work.
Characters are thrust together in a very clumsy and clunky way. Before episode 6 we have the entire crew back where they used to be, but now include Saji (just by a one in a billion coincidence) and an identical twin brother. Not to mention Louise is not only suddenly a pilot, but on her way to becoming an ace. It's just all very forced, when season 1 was much better at naturally giving characters reason to be where they are and doing what they're doing.
Another problem is season 1 actually concludes the arcs for most of the characters, so in 2 they either have nothing to do, or are given half-hearted new arcs that go nowhere or just aren't all that interesting. Lyle never becomes an interesting character in his own right. Setsuna doesn't seem to have any more internal struggle with the issue of war, and even responds to his innovation without any fuss whatsoever. And as others in the thread have mentioned, Al really does nothing other than worry about Marie.
That said, it has some of the best action in the series, and it never tips over into actually being BAD. But the dip in writing quality is noticeable the moment you start to ask any questions at all.

And by the way, most people are here because they really like Gundam. But part of not being a retard is being able to step back and acknowledge flaws. Nobody in the thread appears to be over analyzing anything, you're probably just braindead.
The very fact that people here are willing to discuss these shows beyond "wow this is great I love Gundam!!!!" actually proves how much we care about it. But if you want to act like some idiot 16 year old girl who just wants to buy the tshirt and never THINK about the thing she likes, then go right ahead. Meanwhile the adults will be having a conversation.
>>14959489
You can overanalyze anything you want, but don't try to pretend this subject matter is actually important. 90% is just shit posting anyway instead of your ideal of an adult's conversation.
>>14959517
>don't try to pretend this subject matter is actually important
Who is doing that? What posts imply Gundam 00 opinions are important? You're just a faggot who is bitching about nothing and has nothing whatsoever to contribute. You could post "ugh guys this doesn't even matter" in response to every single thread on this site.
Now tell me, which post triggered you?
>>14958863
You are dumb man.
>>14959682
No, he is Patrick
>>14959489
Absolutely not triggered
But the last 150 posts were all a big s1/ s2 sucks because circlejerk
I usually don't care but some of you are acting like the pretentious anime connaisseurs you only find on /a/
>>14959723
Contribute an opinion, or even a joke, or fuck off. Hell a shitpost is technically of more value than "stop discussing the very thing this board is for, guys"
Maybe you'd rather another psuedo-/pol/ thread or something? If you don't want to talk about mech anime, why are you even here?
>>14959682
Great counterpoint
>>14959739
Saying that half of the thread sucks as bad as /a/ is also an opinion
Kill yourself crybaby
>>14958863
>Saji
>Louise
If they stripped these fucks out of the show literally nothing of value would've been lost.
>>14960039
I disagree. Saji and Louise were there to show how war can drastically affect normal every day people, even if they aren't in the war or anywhere close to it. They start off just as normal high schoolers. Saji is working at a pizza joint so he can save money for dating Louise. Saji then loses his sister who was investigating, Louise lost everything because Nena is a cunt.
>>14960082
I think he means stripped from season 2, which is true. You're both right. They were good in season 1 but have nothing to contribute to season 2 other than making it worse.
>>14959756
>kill yourself crybaby
You're the one who came into the thread to cry about it, fagmaster.
And don't forget, your post isn't important. :^)
>>14960181
>You're the one who came into the thread to cry about it
That wasn't me, sperglord. I just replied because I don't like you
>'hurr durr why don't you contriboot'
>'let me write 3 lines on how your post wasn't to my liking'
literally kill yourself
My contribution: Season 2 was better because it had more action
>>14960274
>he admits at last he's just mad as fuck because he saw some posts being critical of s2
There there
>>14960274
>actually using hurr durr in 2016
Fuck man, you must be unbearable in real life. I'm going to assume you don't get invited to many social events.
s1 gundam RG suits when?

>responding with ad hominem
off to /b/ with you
>>14960414
>the guy using hurr durr lectures someone else on their argument fallacies
Amazing scenes
>>14960274
No wonder you're so assblasted about the thread if you're dumb enough to think season 2 was better because muh action scenes.
Stick to the Taken movies you braindead retard.
It's Gundam 00's 10 anniversary next year. I sure hope Bandai has something planned.Fuck has it really been 10 years?
>>14958863
Agree. In season 1 I could tell you what any of the characters were doing and why but I'd struggle to tell you what everyone in 2 was doing or why. Characters just seemed to exist to haphazardly get the show to the next action set piece. The action was good, but they needed to spend more time figuring out how to get to those scenes without so many coincidences or vague motives.
>>14913599
bandai/sunrise knew they struck gold with their formula in Gundam Wing and I think a lot of people fail to notice just how much that formula was improved upon in 00.
>Everybody gets a backstory
>That backstory matures and develops across the episodes/seasons
>dat fucked up Exia in s2e1
The innovators bullshit during season 2 wasn't wholly necessary. The A-laws were a cool enough antagonist.
>>14914894
Thats fucking sad. I would like to see a series developed exclusively for the western market. Maybe a direct netflix or amazon prime production. Anime is dying over there solely because of their own overly vocal minority of neckbeards and hikikomori.
>>14961557
Fucking shit it really has been 10 years hasn't it? I remember when a friend of mine used 00 music in a class project then a band member asked where we got this amazing music from."Don't worry you will never hear this music ever again."
This is a Gundam.
>>14944175
I want figures of this shorts versions of the 00 Raiser and Alvaaron.
That sword was kind neat for how simple it was.
>>14962054
I want the fake film itself. Seemed genuinely fun.

Wait a fucking moment...running "Time 3 hours 48 minutes?"
Holy shit, not even Peter Jackson...

>Not to mention Louise is not only suddenly a pilot, but on her way to becoming an ace.
She's not an ace, but Ribbons' guinea pig for Innovator project.
>Lyle never becomes an interesting character in his own right.
I don't agree with this. I think he was interesting in a way that he stopped pretending to be behind his brother's shadow, starting with his decision not to follow Neil's descent to seeking revenge.
>Setsuna doesn't seem to have any more internal struggle with the issue of war
His internal struggle cotinued and concluded in Season 2.
>>14959742
You are welcome, dumb guy.
Almost 10 years later and no AU series has beaten 00's OST.
Will they ever top it in a new AU series?
>>14963424
As much as I dislike the series, SEED Destiny's soundtrack is objectively better, which shouldn't be surprising considering 2/3rds of the show's budget probably went to it.
>>14963424
Keep dreaming 00fag SEED has 00's soundtrack beat from the outset lmao
Let's not forget about Gundam Wing
>>14963479

Sure thing fag.

fag
>>14963578
How were you not aborted before birth?
>>14963225
Louise wanting to be a pilot at all is dumb, and the fact that she could become one in such little time is ridiculous. And even if you use the defense that it was all Ribbons' doing, it's a perfect example of the kind of mindblowingly huge coincidences that feels like the writers were forcing s1 characters to still be relevant in s2.
Why did he choose Louise to be that guinea pig? Is there any good reason he would choose Louise, who had no pilot experience whatsoever and was missing an arm, to be his Innovation guinea pig, other than "we need Louise to have a role in s2"?
And about Lyle, your counterpoint is nothing more than "I thought he was interesting" but it's weak as hell because it's nothing more than "my brother wanted revenge, but I don't." The problem here is Lyle is still 100% about "my brother did this, I won't be like him" or "my brother did this, I'll honour him by doing this too." Everything Lyle does has something to do with what his brother may or may not do, he never becomes a full character in his own right. You have to admit that by the end of the series, you and everyone else still thinks of him primarily as "the twin brother"
>>14963760
How were you not aborted AFTER birth once your parents realized how autistic you are

would appreciate a bluray release of the whole series that's not split into 7 volumes containing 2-3 eps each :/

I haven't watched SEED yet.
Gundam in general has been put on my backburner, so it'll be a while until I get to it.
Got any select tracks from SEED?
I'm guessing you're referring to the bgm, and not the vocal tracks.
The only tracks that really matter.

Aside from CC, 00 is the only Gundam series that got a movie that was actually a sequel/finale rather than a compilation film.
>>14966195
not that guy, but the london symphony orchestra's album of the seed and seed destiny soundtracks were pretty good

here's what I'd pick as my favorite
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEZ_a8h8Jk8
>>14966213
What do you mean aside from CC? Turn A's movies were also compilations. Wing was the Gundam story that received a sequel movie set about a year after the events of the TV series.
>>14966235
would you believe I completely forgot about Wing.
also CC = Char's Counterattack
I guess I should have used CCA
In retrospect Ali Al Saachez got the death he deserved.
I remember some people were bothered that he wasn't bested in battle, but you gotta remember that he was essentially a modern day viking.
He loved war, and didn't really have any other motivation than to make sure conflict continued. Dying in battle would have been a glorious end to him.
Instead he was rendered unable to fight back, forced to run with his tail between his legs, and then shot dead in a hallway.
Something so incredibly mundane and pathetic.
>>14957019
Asides from Alelujah getting hit with the romance stick, my problem was that s2 seemed to have too many characters, but not enough time to give them all proper spotlight.
To me it seemed like Graham Aker would only show up every once in a while to remind people he was there.
Nevertheless I ended up really liking S2, and thought it a fitting sequel to S1.
/a/ here, what are the best Gundams to watch?
>>14966269
>Graham turns up
>"I HAVE TRANS AM!"
>Graham leaves
>>14966270
AGE and Wing, that's all you need.
You can watch CCA any time you feel like it.
>>14966279
Ok thanks anon
>>14966279
>not recommending Destiny
C'mon.
The 00 movie was an excellent conclusion for the series IMO. It brought together what the series was all about, thematically, and wrapped things up on a high note. 00 may have been a bumpy ride, but in retrospect I'm glad I gave it a chance.
>>14966277

At least he got over his mopey Bushidofaggot phase and went out like a true, red-blooded American.
>>14966352
>Why do you falter? Wasn't it you who taught me to fight for the sake of living? To keep living that life filled with contradictions?

Why was AWOT so great?
>>14936857
Gundam Build Fighters is literally the greatest love letter to ANY fandom ever made.
Seriously.
Even if you didn't like the direction of the series, you could tell it was made by people who loved gundam.
>>14941183
>>14941129
I love how Mr. Bushido isn't actually what Graham calls himself, but a nickname everyone gave him since he put on the mask that he actually finds kind of annoying.

Never saw Zeta, I see.

all that I can tell from that snapshot was that Mizushima added more action in response to the fans

Allelujah is my fav. I wish they went more into his character tho

I love anime genetics.
>>14941569

She actually dies her hair pink, I think her hair is naturally white.
>>14966379
Yes and no... I too have always had differing opinions on the red parts, but without that it becomes a bit 'less distinctive, and boring.
The original color is good if you want a personal custom for yourself, but the final version is best suited to be the successor of 00 Raiser. Iconically speaking.
>>14966384
as long as Fon Spaak exists, I don't consider anything from the manga to be canon.
Also while we're talking about hot opinions, what do you guys think of this one?
I got it from some guy on tumblr (fuck you, I just have an account so I can follow porn artists), and I think it brings up some interesting points.
Though it does get preachy towards the end.
>>14966404
holy shit that really does look boring
>>14960356
Maybe next year, when it's 00's 10th anniversary.
>RG Nadleeh/Virtue
Oh God that thing would probably fall apart with every move, but I'd still buy it.
who the fuck is responsible for this
WHOOOOOOO
>>14966407
>as long as Fon Spaak exists, I don't consider anything from the manga to be canon.
Feldt's parents are from the light novel, 00P. There's no Fon Spaak in there.
>>14961593
>I'd struggle to tell you what everyone in 2 was doing or why. Characters just seemed to exist to haphazardly get the show to the next action set piece.
In a sense this is actually covered, after the events of Season 1 a few of the characters do actually question what the hell are they doing and don't know what to do about it.
They basically constantly sacrifice themselves with the end result being the world is really really much worse off, I mean they learn that the "Plan" all along was that they were actually meant to be destroyed.
Would mess with anyone's head really.

>Something so incredibly mundane and pathetic.
I wouldn't exactly call a bullet to the head mundane. But yes, in retrospect of Ali, it was pathetic. And yeah, I was one of those people who were bothered about it. But, in thinking back on it, the manner of his demise was appropriate.
Still though, he's my favorite villain of the franchise and he was thoroughly badass and entertaining. The guy had no misconceptions or delusions on what he was. He was a fighter, and he loved it. And I loved that he loved it.
