It really gonna depend on your taste; are you already accustomed with old animes, that you would not mind some dated material (even if in the original series, the animation is only really bad in some points of the few first episodes, later on it get better)? Or, would you prefer a more recent animation and dont have any prejudice against the use of CGI?

It is not bad, that I can say. In the original series there was only one female character in the entire ship. In the 2199 we have more female characters, that are or a original character or genderbend of almost irrelevent characters.

To make you have a idea, the yamato brown female pilot is the genderbend a popular male character from the original series, but that only apears in some few episodes and only have some few lines. She have more importance and screen time in 2199.

The alien famale pilot was a unnamed male alien pilot in the original that only apears in one episode. In 2199, she also have more screen time and importance.

The majority of the characters tend to be more fleshed out in 2199.

You really should watch both; the original Yamato series, especially the second one, is a landmark in anime, as well as being very solid shows in their own right (especially season 2). 2199 is a very solid remake and a great show too, but it's always best to see where such things came from first.

2199 is overall a much more consitent, better paced and better produced show, but some of the parts it omits from the original were pretty strong. So it depends on what you're looking for. If you want a good show go for 2199, but if you're willing to risk it for something a bit more experimental in spite of quality go for the original.

Yeah, but this is kind of acceptable because of the sheer number of new characters or more present old characters that shared the screen time with him, in the same number of episodes as the original series.

Again, I also, personally, prefer 2199 Kodai, so I dont see much problem on it. He is this kind of more calm, and self controled, in a more realisticaly manner, character that I think we lack today, and that suits very well in military fiction. This does not save him of looking bland in some points, sure.

I don't mind the 3D ships but the 3D robot sticks out like a sore thumb

Series 3 kind of feels like after it got the episode cut they just decided to eliminate anything introduced by it, in order to be able to make the next production basically start straight from Yamato II.

Same thing happens to the two movies released before series III, it feels like they really feared actually introducing relevant characters, so everything ends up "cleaned up" in order to avoid big character suddenly being around for the next production - like Mamoru and his daughter dying.

I watched both together, hated the excesive T&A in 2199 and still preferred it to the original. 2199 has a much larger and better explored world, has no QUALITY, doesn't change the bad guys' skin halfway through and doesn't hamfist a message right at the end of the show with practically no buildup. It's a bit more pussywhipped and Kodai is kind a lot more boring, but that's about it.

I haven't been following it closely. Has it been confirmed whether this will go by the movie version or tv version of the events? The main difference, aside from the "everybody dies" ending is Yamato's captain, who becomes Kodai in the anime, but it's Hijikata in the movie, while in the tv show Hijikata becomes the Andromeda's captain..

Here's an opinion from someone who didn't watch the original and just watched 2199: It's a fantastic sci-fi anime on its own. It might have been different when people had to wait for the releases but being able to marathon each arc was great pacing-wise. The animation is solid, character interaction is way better than most anime we get these days and at its heart it's still a sci-fi story about a bunch of humans flying a giant ship to who knows where. It's definitely false to say that people only like it because of waifus and big asses (though they're welcome as well).

I for one am looking forward to 2202.
