I'm going to go with the Zentradi on this one.

That might seem like a weird answer, but bare with me.

The Empire has faster FTL, and more powerful superweapons. The Empire controls far more territory. In many respects, they have more advanced technology.

The problem is that the Zentradi have a much larger military. The biggest ships and superweapons the Empire has dwarf anything the Zentradi have, but the Zentradi can throw 5000 ships at a Death Star, have both sides annihilate each other, and call that a stunning Zentradi victory. Destroying any Zentradi ship doesn't matter, because there is more where that came from.

The Zentradi send a fleet of 4 million ships to destroy a planet instead of a Death Star, but guess what? There are hundreds of Zentradi fleets that size. IIRC, the number thrown out at the end of SDF was an estimated ~350 other Zentradi fleets.

They can simply swarm the Empire, and while a unified Galactic Empire might be able to drive the Zentradi back they won't have the chance to unify because the Zentradi have the production and numbers to be EVERYWHERE.

And those individual fleets are effectively autonomous, attacking and destroying the heavily defended factory stations only prevents reinforcements for a single one of those 350 fleets. A major victory, to be sure, but it won't win the war overnight.

The Zentradi don't even need planets. They can just roll around and raze any civilized world they see to the ground and move on, like a swarm of locusts, because they don't give a fuck. The only territory they have to hold are the factory sats, and those can MOVE.

The Empire simply doesn't have the navy to hold all of the territory they control. They would have to abandon the vast majority of the galaxy to try and hold a much smaller area to concentrate their forces, but that means that the various Zentradi fleets can converge on them.

They sent 4 million ships at Earth, and the command structure was beheaded and their own fallback plans used against them because a portion of the fleet had betrayed them to the enemy.

Space War One was not a good example of normal Zentradi tactics. In most wars, the Zentradi never would have exposed their mobile fortress. Bodozol only brought his to the fight because he wanted to oversee the destruction of Earth ASAP because of the risk of culture contamination.

Which, by the way, won't be a thing when fighting the Empire. Not because the Empire doesn't have culture (it does) but because the Zentradi won't be listening to them.

The Zentradi didn't get exposed to Culture until they thought to start eavesdropping on human communications to try and figure out a weakness int the Macross. They only needed THAT because they couldn't just blow it up because they wanted to capture it instead, and it kept not working out.

As long as the Empire is an enemy that the Zentradi can deal with by shooting at them, they have no need to make the same mistakes that exposed them to culture in Space War One. After all, that's how they managed to go for millions of year without getting exposed in the first place: shoot first, ask questions never.

Honestly, I can't imagine how. The Zentradi didn't even, as far as we know, have a plan for stealing Nukes and and 'repair technology' from humans beyond capturing little people and screaming "YOUR SECRETS, DIVULGE THEM!!!"

The zent can't reverse engineer Empire tech, because they can't even forward engineer their town. They have no engineers. None. The Zentradi machines maintain themselves. If the machines break, they stay broken. They have no spare parts to replace anything, because the factory sat has only two settings: build a complete and fully functional ship already all put together and ready to drive off the factory floor, and 'OFF'.

If you gave the Zentradi a functional hyperdrive and the plans for the Dearth Star, all the Zentradi could do was put them on a table, look at them, and realize that they have NO IDEA what to do now. They, in fact, understand so little about technology that they are not equipped enough to realize that they don't know enough to steal what they need.

And the horrible thing is, even f the Zentradi themselves were taught how a hyperdrive works and how to make one? Their ships STILL WOULDN'T BE BUILT WITH HYPERDRIVES. Because thats now how they come out of the factory sats. They they want to build new, advanced tech into their ships they have to build them, take them apart, and then build them again a second time by hand. They might be able to do that for a limited number of ships, but it won't be the whole fleet.

This presumes that they only learn about outside tech, as opposed to reverse engineering their own tech enough to understand how their factory sats work. We know that they can be reprogrammed, Earth did it, but the Zents themselves would never think to do so on their own.

While they can't destroy a planet, wouldn't a Zentradi capital ship be able to destroy entire fleets of Star Destroys in one blast? They have their own Macross Cannons, after all. That shit is designed for taking out fleets at a time.
