Because for 95% of the series, he's a fucking doormat. The majority of the crew of the Gekko are barely adults themselves, but they hold it over his head and walk all over him simply because he lets them.

Note how Charles and Ray treat him like a kid while not shitting on him.

Gekkostate is an outlaw organization and he's a young fanboy who wants to join. I think the hazing is pretty natural given his attitude and the fact that they're all a little jealous of his relationship with Eureka. Holland takes it too far though.

They realized he had a breaking point for tolerating their bullshit, and since he was kind of important to Eureka now it was a calculated move to keep him docile.

So, I like Eureka7, i think it's alright, but nothing special. I could dig the designs, and I liked the colour palette.

But I fucking LOVED the movie. I mean goddamn it was great.
